Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers
In the case of Art Blakey, the name 'Jazz Legend' is wholly appropriate. Born in 1919, Blakey served his musical apprenticeship in the bands of Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie where his reputation as a drummer grew. The Jazz Messangers were formed in 1955 and were pivotal, until Art's death in 1990, in nurturing the hard edged be-bop sound and the jazz greats of the future.

Art Blakey - Jazz Messenger
Although Blakey's influence as a drummer and bandleader was enormous, his greatest contribution may have been as a mentor to younger musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean and Wynton Marsalis.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers were the quintessential "hard bop" ensemble, rooted in the core elements of Swing and Blues. As Jazz became more prevalent and expansive, the characteristic "hard bop" of the Messengers became accepted as the global definition for Jazz music. Art Blakey, it's eldest and most eloquent exponent was its master. This brilliant performance at Ronnie Scott's from February 21st 1985 is testament to this fact.

Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers
The man from Philadelphia, who introduced himself to his public with the words »Missis Blakey’s only son, Arturo, that’s me», was a true ‘ambassador’ of jazz: he discovered and championed young talented musicians such as Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis, to name but a few. But he also delivered the ‘message’ of hard bop through thousands of performances at festivals right down to the smallest club. Lively, joyous performances, the very highest technical standards,...

Art Blakey - And The Jazz Messengers
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. If you simply can only have one Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers disc it absolutely must be MOANIN'. This 1958 Blue Note date is the cream of the early Messengers' studio sessions. The group of this period featured the wailing Lee Morgan (trumpet), the swinging Benny Golson (sax) and the soulful Bobby Timmons (piano) with longtime bassist Jymie Merritt by Blakey's side. All of the pieces fell into place here to create one of the most...
