Bean : Broad Bean : Aquadulce Claudia
This variety is universally recognised as being best for an autumn sowing. Broad Bean Aquadulce Claudia establishes itself very quickly and will produce a very early crop. It is white seeded and the pods are up to 23cm (9 inches) long. Height: 90-100cm (36-40in).

Sow the Bean seeds 25cm apart and 5cm deep. Two or three rows of beans should be able to climb up the same trellis, or one row per pole. Successional sowing will produce fantastic on-going results.

Hoe regularly and cut off the tops of the plants as soon as four clusters of bloom are showing. Harvest the beans when the pods are well filled and the seed still soft. Plant height: 90-100cm (36-40in)

Culture: For early crops sow late October-November or in January, in a warm sheltered position. Sowings for summer cropping should be made February-March. Sow in double rows 23cm (9") apart, 5cm (2") deep, 23cm (9") apart allowing 90cm (3') between each pair of rows. Pinch out the plant tops when in full flower to obtain better-filled pods and to avoid infestation with black fly. Double row 6m (20').

Superb broad bean. Mine produced long pods filled with succulent, large beans in August from a late spring sowing. They have a fantastic fresh flavour. The packet suggests they can also be sown in October to overwinter, so I will try some alongside Aquadulce to see how they perform.
