The phrase, now maddeningly misused by politicians and DJs alike, came from this wonderfully dark and cynical anti-war novel of the 1960s. (Catch-22 states that a man can be exempted from bombing missions if he is mad; but that the desire to be exempted is proof that he is sane.) The novel is as funny as it is bitter and no-one growing up through the Falklands and Gulf conflicts will fail to see the point. (Kirkus UK)

Yossarian is a bombardier in the 256th Squadron of the Army Air Forces during World War II, stationed on Pianosa, a fictionalised island in the Mediterranean between mainland Italy and Corsica. The squadron's...

Not many writers introduce a phrase - let alone a whole idea - into the language. In CATCH-22, Joseph Heller invented a motif for the modern world. For that book alone he is one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. But where did the author who was able to create that novel come from? And what happened to those remarkable characters? CATCH AS CATCH CAN for the first time collects early works, previously unpublished stories and lost chapters of CATCH-22 to chart the development...
