Coltrane
John Coltrane, who died aged 40 in 1967, is one of half a dozen truly fundamental contributors to the history of jazz. No-one - not Armstrong, Ellington or Monk, nor even Charlie Parker - inspires quite the same mystique or continuing intensity of fascination. No young saxophonist of the past forty years has been able to escape his influence, and few musicians have had their work so obsessively documented on record. This fantastic book is the first to do justice to this great musical pioneer. As...

A trumpet part for a number called 'Egyptian Nights' written out in bold pencil by the young John Coltrane on a 9.5" X 12.5" sheet of music paper. Elaborately titled in Coltrane's own hand. An item from John Coltrane's estate, stamped as such on the reverse by 'Jowcol Music'. An excellent item from the saxophonist's early days, most probably during his time in King Kolax's band. In fine condition.

Two slices of sample-heavy electronic pop from the label who brought you the laptop folk of Team LG. This is the label's first venture into a series of limited colour 7"s, with this one in a pristine white. A-side, 'By The River' seems to be largely based around an excerpt of a drunken Irish gentleman slurring his way through a nursery rhyme-like song, but the song works rather better than that might suggest. Further to that, B-side, 'Coltrane' has some dreamy Morr-esque melodies to boast of. Very...

sandwiched between two of the john coltrane quartet's greatest masterpieces - 'live at birdland' and 'a love supreme' - 'crescent' is often forgotten. but this album of four ballads and one blues is full of understated beauty. 'crescent', 'the wise one' and 'lonnie's lament' are three of the coltrane's most beautiful compositions; these are some of the first ballads in the later coltrane style, with the saxophone playing the theme in free time over the rumbling rhythm section. (there's a great 5...

Tired of the endless tarmac and Little Chefs, and keen to see more on his travels than the tail-lights of the car in front of him, Robbie Coltrane has set himself quite a challenge. Instead of scaling the Himalayas, trekking across the Antarctic or hacking through the Brazilian rainforest, he has decided to explore strange and exotic areas that are somewhat closer to home. Armed only with a map, an inquisitive mind and one of his favourite classic cars - a Carmen-red drophead Jaguar XK150S - he ventures...
