"From the most innovative producer in Barbaresco, this Syrah-dominated Tuscan blend is one of the most exciting Italian reds I have tried this summer. The nose is dominated by blackberry and plums but the precision of this fruit on the palate is balanced by a solid tannic structure and fresh acidity with sweet vanilla from a careful use of oak. This IGT wine is not only an unusual find, but a real bargain from one of Italy's greatest winemakers."

A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, this flagship super Tuscan from the Guldener family has an excellent sour cherry nose, nicely concentrated berry fruit freshness and supple tannins without being in any way over the top; the bright, vibrant Sangiovese fruit quality is lent added backbone by the touch of blackcurranty Cabernet Sauvignon.

2007 Nero d'Avola IGT, Bruno Fina
Bruno Fina spent the 1990's running Sicily's experimental cellar at Alcamo, applying radical techniques to Sicilian varieties in pursuit of their true vocation. He advised growers making plantings - so he knows where the best grapes are, and what they can do. His cellar, near Erice, was ready for the superb 2005 vintage. Nero d'Avola is also known as Calabrese, given its apparent origins in Calabria. Big, rich blackberry and dark cherry flavours make this a great wine for game.

The grapes are selected from vineyards in the northern Lombardy. The microclimate gives the perfect pre-harvest conditions of cool nights and days which are not too hot. The effect is excellent fruit quality in the grapes.

Some wines are beautiful enough that you can explore them aesthetically rather than reduce them to integers of flavour. Princic believes in delivering what nature delivers him – here the beautifully ripe, healthy grapes from biodynamically tended vineyards come into the winery (traditional fermentation vessels here) and undergo fermentation with natural yeasts. Punch downs and skin maceration account for the delicate amber colour. The nose is understated – apricot kernels, butternut and warm spice...

Giuseppe Sesti originally an academic with a particular passion for the effects of the moon on agriculture (he has published four books on the subject) took on the Argiano estate in 1975. The estate consists of 254 acres of land of which only eight are given over to the growing of grapevines. The rest is olive groves, pasture and woodland. The vineyards, however, are some of the best sited in the region, being on the southern slopes of Montalcino where the most prized Brunello comes from.

The Amanti del Vino wines are sourced and blended by Englishman Robin Woodhouse who has been based in Italy for many years. He has been the ‘legs’ on the ground, looking after the Italian end of some very large winemaking projects for British buyers, with particular expertise in Puglia and Sicily. For the Amanti wines he sources the best wines possible from selected co-operatives in Sicily and elsewhere before taking them to the Venice area for blending and bottling.

This was underlined when his 2000 Torrione, made from Sangiovese and about 10% of Merlot, was awarded a Decanter Award in a tasting of Tuscan IGTs in the May 2004 issue. The balance of this wine is outstanding: it is rich yet nicely defined, with lifted perfumes, plenty of supple tannin and great length.

With the cost of fine wines creeping ever up (don’t be fooled by those supermarket loss leaders!) it’s a joy to find a bottle of high-class wine at a down-at-heel price. This fresh and lively Grillo costs less than £6 yet tastes a great deal more. Combining aromas of peach, pineapple and other exotic fruits with a supple body and a clean mineral finish, this is yet another example of Sicilian winemaking come good. It’s a great wine to enjoy on its own before a meal, or with food – a simple mozzarella...

Deep plummy fruit with hints of liquorice and spice, warm and well rounded. Nice firm tannins and a good amount of body make this a great food wine, from the Marche region. 'A lovely full flavoured, blackcurrant and plum with a touch of cherry, red with fine tannins, and hints of herbs and figs. Altogether a very well textured yet easy-going Sangiovese.' Malcolm Gluck.

All that is good about Chianti may be found here, well defined and exotically herby nose, with a luscious juicy palate of strawberry and cherry flavours held together by a delicate tannin weighting.

Niccolò Antinori bought the fourteenth-century Castello della Sala in 1940, to provide a source of white wines to match the excellence of his Tuscan reds. With the introduction of Cervaro della Sala in 1987, his dream was fully realised: this is one of Italy’s defining whites, as influential and sought after as Tignanello. The vineyards are planted with a mixture of traditional Italian and international varieties, offering a range of wines from the traditional Orvieto to the mould-breaking IGTs....
