Originally distilled at the famous Bow Street distillery in Dublin, since 1975 Jameson has been produced at Midleton, an enormous modern distillery in County Cork built by Irish Distillers to streamline the production of its many brands. This brought an end to nearly 200 years of Jameson production in Dublin, but the Old Jameson Distillery in Bow Street is now a visitor's centre. Tourists can also visit the Midleton distillery, which is home to many other brands beside Jameson, including Green Spot...

A blend named after a defunct distillery attached to the town of the same name a few miles along the coast of Northern Ireland from Bushmills, whence the malt element of this blend is sourced. Not to be confused with the afore-mentioned defunct Coleraine distillery, owned by Bushmills, which closed in 1978, but which did exist as a very limited bottling single malt about fifteen years ago. Hope you got all that.

Millar's Irish Whiskey is a unique blend of the finest grain and malt Irish whiskeys with exceptional character and superior quality. It is double distilled and matured almost entirely in once used oak bourbon casks. Millars Special Reserve has been distilled, matured and blended to produce a darker, full bodied, smooth whiskey in the traditional Irish sense. On the nose there are aromas of sweet grapes which join forces with the grain to offer a lush sweetness alongside the harder, oakier grains...

Locke's Blended Irish Whiskey
Locke's Distillery has the distinction of being the oldest licensed distillery in the world dating back to 1757. This was a small rural distillery that prospered in the 19th century by successfully exporting its whiskey to the UK, US, Argentina, Australia and other UK colonies. The change in the economic climate eventually forced Locke's to cease operations in 1953 and sell of its assets. This loss in distilling history was ultimately Cooley Distillery's gain when it bought over Locke's Distillery...

Irish Whiskey
Originally blended from a rich, dark, heavy bodied Cavendish, this tobacco is made smooth by adding a mixture of Zimbabwean orange smoking grades and aromatic Thailand Burley. It is mellowed using Black Perique blend tobacco from Louisiana bayou. As tradition dictates, the leaf is stored for many years in sherry oak barrels, giving the tobacco its name and an exquisite mature oaken aroma. 50g Tin

Review : This blended whiskey has a floral, peppery scent. The high proportion of malt whiskey shows through in subtle flavours which develop with each sip. In fact the blend is such that it may win some who dislike the smokey/salty/peaty tones sometimes associated with whiskies (Scottish & Irish alike). In comparison with 'Jameson' I would suggest that '70' is the smoother of the two & deserves to win many converts. I would even seek novice whiskey drinkers to give it a try too.

Malt whiskey that becomes Black Bush is aged up to eleven years in selection sherry-seasoned oak casks before being blended with a small portion of a special single grain whiskey to enhance the independant, non-conformist character of the malt. The malt used in the mash derives its clean taste from the deliberate absence of peat used in the malted barley drying process.
