Riccardo Chailly conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and an outstanding cast in Nikolaus Lehnhoff's sensational staging of Puccini's great operatic thriller. Stars Catherine Malfitano as Tosca, Bryn Terfel as Scarpia and Richard Margison as Cavaradossi. Bryn Terfel plays the 'tough guy', in contrast to many of his other stage characters, which makes this Tosca immediately stand out as unusual from others. Outstanding orchestral performance with Riccardo Chailly conducting the Royal Concertgebouw...

In 'Tosca', Puccini explored the dark side of human emotion, a marked change from the late-Romantic sentimentality of 'La Boheme'. Also in contrast to 'La Bohème' where the villain was fate and so the stage action was minimal, both heros and villains are humans who struggle on stage, and the clashes are always between single individuals. It is a story of cheating and doubt - nothing seems honest and direct, even love is troubled by jealousy.

Puccini - Tosca (Bartolettli)
This gripping and visually stunning film has been universally hailed as one of the most satisfying of all versions of opera on celluloid. Director Gianfranco de Bosio has given an extraordinary dimension of realism to this story of love, deception and murder by shooting it all on the original Roman locations. The three exceptional singer-actors who bring this classic tragedy vividly to life are the beautiful Bulgarian soprano Raina Kabaivanska as Puccini's passionate heroine, Placido Domingo as...

Puccini: Tosca, Jane Eaglen Sings
Three arias, two for tenor and one for soprano, are the most familiar parts of the score and are among the most recorded pieces of music in the world. They share certain qualities, namely Puccini’s lush lyricism and expansive expressiveness. They are relatively short, none of them lasting more than three minutes, as they are designed not to interrupt the momentum. Besides these solos, the soprano and the tenor participate in two effective love duets, one in the first act, the other in the last. The...

German Art Nouveau master Adolpho Hohenstein (1854 – 1928) advertised the drama of the 19th century Italian opera with equally dramatic posters. Hohenstein was so immersed in the Italian spirit that he was nicknamed “Father of the Italian Poster.” While working for publishing house, Ricordi, he created postcards and immense posters promoting its music. Hohenstein’s flamboyant posters paired well with the drama of the opera, and transformed the Italian poster into art.

Towering in its idealism over most of the operatic repertory, Beethoven's opera is heart-stopping in the theatre but also a sublime, uplifting musical experience without that staging: not many operas convey as much of a message in 'tone' alone. Though the +Fidelio+ discography is now large, few recordings stand out as this one continues to do, nearly half a century after it was first captured in stereo. Otto Klemperer's lofty conducting evokes the transcendental spirit, and Jon Vickers's anguished...
