A word of caution: tartan is an imposing print, so don't go OTT. One of the best ways to flaunt your taste for tartan is with accessories (but not too many!). If you want to take the trend to the next level, wear one tartan piece such as a dress or jacket and team with classic colours like black or grey.

As you are going to New York in November it will be cold and maybe snowing so you need to ensure you keep warm, luckily knitwear is on trend and you can find a huge selection of sweaters and knitted dresses that can be...

And it's not just about partywear - lighten up drab and miserable days with a bit of glitz and sparkle in unexpected ways, with a sequinned vest under a suit jacket or a sequin-edged cardigan over skinny jeans and tough boots.

Capes go perfectly with narrow skirts for ultra chic style, and also look good with narrow trousers and short skirts. They don't go with casual clothes, but if you're going smart you can't go wrong with a short black or grey cape.

It’s good to plan ahead and avoid the crowds that flock to the shops closer to December. Christmas outfits are just starting to appear in the high street and they will always sell the latest version of “the little black dress” that appear every year in a variety of styles. I would suggest that you opt for an empire line as this will flatter...

After purple, the other big colour for winter is orange, as seen at Ralph Lauren and Nina Ricci. Like purple, orange is showing up in various shades from reddy orange and apricot to copper. It's going to be a big feature on accessories as well as clothes including coats and macs, and we'll be seeing it in materials from silk and wool to synthetics.

Miniskirts with long socks, jeans with argyle sweaters...the possibilities are endless! But to avoid looking like you're on your way to 6th period maths, don't wear ballet pumps or trainers with the preppy look: break it up with heels or biker boots.

The arrival of flares this summer was a precursor to the wave of large trousers we're seeing now, but the difference this season is that they're worn short, Eighties style. These also signal the end of skinnies once and for all, which will no doubt be good news for some! Expect to see wide trews in styles from pleated to belted to turned-up.

You don't have to wait 'til Saturday night to get your sequins out...but neither do you want to get mistaken for a disco ball. Go with one sequinned item and combine with neutral, matte accessories, such as a sequinned mini-dress with woolly tights, or a skirt with a muted black jacket.
