"This wine has completely shut down since it’s been bottled but exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, high levels of tannin, and sweet, noble black currant fruit intermixed with some licorice, espresso roast, and pain grille. In the vernacular, it is closed for business, with medium to full body, high levels of tannin, and good acidity in a more structured, classic style than the 2003. As regular buyers will be aware, we [Lay & Wheeler] have heaped considerable praise on the successes of Poyferré since the 1998 vintage. The 2003 continues this rich run of form – we all gave this wine exemplary notes. An evocatively-scented, pure, pristine saint-julien. Displaying a harmony, succulence and lushness as impressive as any wine in the commune, it looks set to evolve a year or two earlier than Barton. An outstanding freshness merely adds to its credentials. A wine we rate very highly...

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. There is a touch of wet sand on the nose of this Saint Julien, crisp blackberry and boysenberry, lovely earthy and cedar wood notes underneath. The palate has a ripe entry with grainy tannins and good acidity. There is a nice prickle on the tongue here with fine definition towards the finish. Short but well crafted. Tasted January 2011.

Description Notes: Léoville-Poyferré was the Léoville that got left in the starting blocks in terms of reputation and quality. Owned by the Cuvelier family since 1921, it was not until the 1970’s, when Didier Cuvelier took control, that quality began to improve. In the last 20 years, with the assistance of Michel Rolland since 1995, has turned Léoville-Poyferré into one of St-Julien's finest estates, with 80 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%), Petit Verdot...

In my two recent tastings of it, I changed that window to 2018-2050, which probably says more than the following tasting note could say.
