  • Ch teau Barde-Haut 2002 (by the case)
Ch teau Barde-Haut 2002 (by the case)

It takes a well connected Buyer like Jean-Marc Sauboua to track down dwindling parcels of mature claret. This magnificent Grand Cru is just the second vintage produced by Sylvain Cathiard (sister of Daniel, who owns Ch teau Smith Haut Lafitte in the Graves). 2002 wasn't an easy year, but this superb wine impressed critic Hugh Johnson. The property lies nestled in a south facing amphitheatre overlooking the Dordogne, ideal for its Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines, which are hand harvested and fermented...

    Château Barde-Haut 2001, St-Emilion

"The 2001 Barde-Haut is just reaching its plateau of full maturity. Gorgeously complex notes of plums, underbrush, flowers, and earth are accompanied by a fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and no hard edges. This wine should keep for another decade." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.

  • 2011 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion
2011 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion

A successful effort in this vintage, Barde-Haut’s 2011 (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) from proprietor Helene Garcin exhibits soft black currant and black cherry fruit intertwined with hints of spice box, earth, vanillin and blue fruits. Medium-bodied with surprising density for a 2011, soft tannins, adequate acidity and a fine finish, it should age effortlessly for 10-15 years.

  • 2010 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion
2010 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Barde-Haut 2010 has a ripe nose of mulberry, blackberry and cassis with a touch of crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of very ripe Merlot, fleshy sweet fruit that is lacking just a little freshness and tension towards the finish. This was a very late malolactic that means the sulphur is denuding brightness a little at this stage, hence my plus sign. God knows how it tasted like to those critics who sampled it in early March. Tasted...

  • 2009 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion
2009 Barde Haut Grand Cru St. Emillion

Made from tiny yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare (May hail damage resulted in this small crop), the opaque purple-colored 2009 reveals an extraordinary nose of mulberries, black cherries, charcoal, barbecue smoke and forest floor. Rich, full-bodied and opulent with silky tannins as well as a broad, unctuous texture, this beauty can be enjoyed now and over the next 15+ years. It is fashioned from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
