The Biondi Santi family was the very first family who made the first Brunello di Montalcino giving their family name to it. Sourced from 10 to 25-year-old Sangiovese Grosso vines and the wine is aged for three years in large Slavonian oak barrels. Fuligni was founded in 1923 round a Medici villa and a country convent and today it is run by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together they produce some of the finest Brunello's in the region. This wine is still young but has elegance, finesse, sweet red berry fruit and spices.

I was really excited about trying a Montalcino, being an up market wine which is close to one of my favourites Italian wines, Montepucciano. However I was desperately diappointed by the 2004 vintage, which I bought on an offer. It lacked fruit and the spirit was dominant. Basically the wine was way past its sell-by date, which presummably accounts for it being on offer. Avoid the 2004 vintage at all costs. I returned the other 5 bottles for credit.
