Hopler Pinot Noir Eiswein 2009 is made with grapes left on the vine until winter when the tempeature in the vineyard and cellar are at most -7oC when water in the grape juice crystallises meaning when the grapes are pressed the juice is more concentrated. A light amber wine with a spicey nose with hints of dates and caramel. Rich on the palate with flavours of honey and notes of smoke and tobacco.

This is on account of tasting this at the end of a long day, really loving it and marking it 9 out of 10, but giving it the simple tasting note of "stunning". Picked on the 20th December, this is one of the very few Eisweins made on the Mosel this year and there are only 600 halves. Dirk Richter was delighted by its development in bottle. Some what fresher than TBA with some moreish orange peel character.

Keith Tulloch Botrytis Semillon 2009 bright gold colour and rich fruit power, this wine also exhibits botrytis influence. A refined palate of citrus flavours, wild honey, quince & pear characters offset by clean and long lingering acidity.

38cl / 10.00% - Eiswein refers to the process of allowing the grapes to freeze on the vine during a frost. The grapes are then picked and pressed quickly so that the frozen water content is separated from the now concentrated grape juice. The production of Eiswein is risky because of the risk that a frost will not come soon enough or the grapes rot beforehand. This means that Eiswein is more expensive and certainly rarer than conventional sweet wines, and the quality is astounding.

Light amber in colour. The nose is dominated with delicate spicy aromas alongside hints of date and caramel. There are smokey elements on the palate which give way to hints of tobacco and honey

Possibly the finest wine in my list? Josef Zimmermann is justifiably proud of his Eiswein; in a region where many makers have in their portfolio an Eiswein, this one stands out from the crowd by a mile, and I am pleased to have been able to secure a tiny allocation - Josef only made 100 litres of this 100% Riesling wine in 2003 (the harvest was early in the morning on 3 January 2004.) The quantity is so tiny because of the relatively small area of vineyard where conditions for Eiswein occur, and...
