  • Grenache,'GSM' Mitchell Estate, Clare Valley
    Grenache,'GSM' Mitchell Estate, Clare Valley

If you're partial to the rich reds of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (or need a really big wine for hearty fare) -you might want to upgrade to this. 'GSM' stands for 'Grenache-Sangiovese-Mourv èdre', Australian shorthand for the classic blend of Châteauneuf. The Mitchells of South Australia's prestigious Clare Valley used fruit sunbaked to super-ripeness to make this surpassingly rich, spicy gem. Pace yourself.

  • SC Pannell Grenache
    SC Pannell Grenache

Pannell Grenache 2009 is made with 100% Grenache from old bush vines in the McLaren Flat, an area Steven got to know well during his tenure as a winemaker with Hardy's. The fruit is manually harvested and then the must is fermented in temperature-controlled, open-topped concrete vats with regular pumping over and punching down to improve extraction of colour and flavour from the skins. The wine is then matured for 18 months in large used French oak vats to avoid smothering the fruit with oak character...

G.G Grenache Gris 2011 (by the case)

Not red, not white, but grey Grenache - now, doesn't that sound drab? But this wine is anything but! It's from Mark Hoddy at Le Chai au Quai in Castillon. He has a great passion for the Roussillon and he's always popping down there to discover yet another amazing parcel of grapes for one of our Chai wines. On one of his forays looking for top red Grenache he came across a few rows of vines that were a little bit different and discovered they were Grenache Gris. Mark decided to experiment and this...

  • Grenache Blanc, Domaine du Bosc, 2011
Grenache Blanc, Domaine du Bosc, 2011

Domaine du Bosc, owned by the Bésinet family, is situated near the town of Béziers at the heart of winemaking in the Languedoc. It has been an important source of sound, good-value wines for The Wine Society since 1982. White grenache is relatively rare in the Languedoc. It is more widely planted further south of the Roussillon and is, of course, one of the permitted grape varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It produces rich, full-flavoured wines that are perfect with food.

    The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2011

Pure (100%) Grenache Blanc is like gold dust in South Africa. It’s hard to explain why when it has the potential to taste this good. Its pretty nose is animated by a bright, intensely pure fruit character of white peach, yellow pear, freshly squeezed lemon and an appetizing mealy note. Six months in old oak casks adds texture and roundness. A wine that improves as you get to know it rather than a showstopper trying to make a big first impression. Don’t be fooled though… it’s dangerously easy to drink...

  • Heartwarming, cheery, spicy Grenache with juicy raspberry, sloe and damson flavours and hints of herbs
Heartwarming, cheery, spicy Grenache with juicy raspberry, sloe and damson flavours and hints of herbs

In 2002, Henri and Daniel Brunier of historic Châteauneuf property Vieux-Télégraphe (a classic cobblestone-strewn estate on the heat-steeped Hill of Crau) thought they'd try bottling their mature-vine Grenache on its own. They were so taken by the result that they've repeated the exercise in subsequent vintages. This cheerily expresses the warm generosity of well-made Grenache: juicy, silky flavours of raspberries, sloes and damsons with hints of aromatic herbs.

The Foundry Grenache Blanc, Voor Paardeberg, 2011

The Foundry is Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams' own venture, with British (though South African based) partner, James Reid. The grenache vineyards are in the old soils of the Paardeberg, in the Swartland region, and the wine has a little Stellenbosch viognier (under 10%) for aromatic lift. It was fermented in barrels previously used for Meerlust's chardonnay, so there are no new oak flavours or aromas. The Foundry will soon have a home of its own but for now the wines are made at Meerlust.

Tramontane Grenache 2010 is made by former Scottish winemerchant Andy Cook in the beautiful French seaside town of Collioure almost on the French/Spanish border. Andy uses Grenache grapes from old vines growing on the schist soils of high-altitude vineyards in the Agly Valley that are crushed and given 4 weeks skin contact after fermentation to ensure excellent extraction of tannin, colour and flavour. The wine, which sees no oak ageing, is a beautiful ruby red with plenty of forest fruit on the...
