A blend of 51.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48.5% Merlot clocking in at 13.7% alcohol, this has a lifted, quite assertive nose with blackberry, a touch of briary, cedar and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly grainy tannins, just a little hardness at the moment but that should dissipate by the time of bottling. It is a little austere and conservative towards the finish but very good weight. Masculine. Drink 2013-2020. Tasted March 2011.

Owned by Charles de Montesquieu in the 18th century, Chateau Saint Ahon was destroyed during the French Revolution and then rebuilt under the 1st Empire. Restored in 1875 in the pure Louis XIII style, it remains unchanged today. It is one of the last remaining wine estates of Blanquefort, boasting 40 hectares in total, 30 of which are vineyards and situated only 25 minutes from the centre of Bordeaux.

La Tonnelle is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot with the remainder being Petit Verdot from vines that have an average age of 25 years. Once picked, the carefully selected grapes are macerated for 3-4 weeks with double daily pumping over to extract maximum colour and flavour. The wine is then matured in oak casks for 1 year before bottling.

Chateau Devise d'Ardilley is situated in the heart of the Medoc, near Paulliac and in the district of St Laurent. Jaques Phillippe is the new owner of this typical, tiny estate (10ha), which he bought in 2000. Of course first rate terroir accounts for the high quality level that this wine has reached. It is of ruby red colour. The bouquet is extremely refined, with notes of blackberry, spice, smoke and faded rose. Its texture shows suave and velvety, with a pleasant balance and no over extraction...

We rather liked this, and at this price Beaumont represents a nice case of claret that will not break the bank. It is of solid quality, situated between Margaux and Saint Julien, and has attractive cherry and blackberry aromas with an easy and gentle palate, a touch of oak and cedar and a fresh finish.
