The blend here this year is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Fathomless, jet-cherry, firm and opaque, with a wonderful sheen, this is attractive from the outset. A compote of warm black fruit dominates the nose, cherries, blackberry and focussed cassis, all complemented by hints of warm fruitcake, and dark chocolate, punctuated by minerals. The nose is extremely intense but has great precision. There is a great complexity dominated by notes of snoke, tobacco and roasted coffee grains. The fruit is always present like freshly picked cherries and currants. In the mouth the wine is huge right at the start. The aroma is persistent and very long lasting. The wine has an excellent balance.

"A strong candidate for a perfect score in about 15 years, the 2010 La Mission Haut-Brion could well turn out to be a modern-day version of their 1955. An enticingly aromatic nose of ripe red berried fruit, baked earth with subtle menthol and cedar notes. Comprising 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon there is a sweetness of red berries and blackcurrants on the entry before the finely tuned tannins envelope the palate with waves of textural richness building towards a fan tail finish with notes of leather and sweet spice.

This is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Cabernet Franc and 27% Merlot and includes that which once would have gone into La Tour Haut-Brion - no longer produced. Beautiful jet-plum in colour, opaque to a tight rim, this presents sweet red and black fruit compote on the nose, summer pudding and spice. The palate is frisky, a profusion of berry fruit supported by cocoa-dry, fine-grained tannins. Luscious and ripe, this is beautifully extracted, well-balanced, full and extraordinarily long.

The aromatics are truly complex for a three year-old wine. While the wine does not possess the fat and succulence of its nearby neighbor, La Mission Haut-Brion, its elegance, finesse, and nobility are apparent.
