Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2009, Pauillac (non owc)
Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2009, Pauillac (non owc)

The main reason the 2009 Lafite Rothschild did not receive a perfect score is because the wine has closed down slightly, but it is unquestionably another profound Lafite, their greatest wine since the amazing 2003. Among the most powerful Lafites ever made (it came in at 13.59% alcohol), the final blend was 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot. The selection was incredibly severe with only 45% of the crop being utilized. A tight, but potentially gorgeous nose of graphite...

  • 1995 Lafite Rothschild per unit
    1995 Lafite Rothschild per unit

Wine Advocate note The 1995 Lafite-Rothschild (only one-third of the harvest made it into the final blend) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. The wine was showing spectacularly well when I tasted it in November, 1997. It exhibits a dark ruby purple color, and a sweet, powdered mineral, smoky, weedy cassis-scented nose. Beautiful sweetness of fruit is present in this medium-bodied, tightly-knit, but gloriously pure, well-delineated Lafite. The 1995 is not as powerful...

  • 2011 Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac
2011 Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot (harvested between September 3-21), the 2011 Lafite Rothschild came in at 12.6% natural alcohol (considerably lower than in 2010 and 2009). Exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, lots of crushed rock, red and black currant, forest floor and underbrush characteristics, moderate tannin and medium body, it is built somewhat along the lines of the 1999 and 2001. It should be a 20- to 25-year wine, but it is not at the level of the 2008, 2009 and 2010. Fresh...

Description and Reviews: *** 94 Points Robert Parker *** *** 94 Points Wine Journal *** Reviews: "A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. "A very deep garnet core. The nose is still very masculine: pencil lead, blackberry, black cherry and a touch of smoke. Much more typicity than the 2000. The palate has good structure, excellent acidity. Very minerally, liquorice and burnt toast. Very fine definition and good weight. Superb balance and poise. This is an archetypal Lafite this is just getting into its stride. Fresh, crisp finish with a touch of green pepper from the Cabernet Franc." eRobertParker.com

    Château Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac 1982

An outstanding vintage despite difficult weather conditions. It was a very dry spring which gave a quick and regular flowering period and a good start for the vegetation. There followed a hot and dry season alternating with storms. The vines were in excellent health. The harvest took place in good spirits, revealing quite high degrees especially for the merlot. This wine is very supple with silky tannins and a long finish. 6% cabernet franc 66% cabernet sauvignon 28% merlot.

The palate is medium-bodied, very fine tannins, wonderful balance and finesse, smooth and cohesive, pure and silky towards the caressing finish with beguiling persistence. Served blind chez Rosemary George MW it has a definable Pauillac nose with subtle notes of cedar, sous-bois and a touch of dried blood. "A successful wine for Lafite, this dark ruby/purple-colored 1993 is tightly-wound, medium-bodied, with a closed set of aromatics that reluctantly reveal hints of sweet blackcurrant fruit, weedy tobacco, and lead pencil scents. Description and Reviews: Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths. According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. A beautiful bouquet of seductive cedarwood, spices, and ripe fruit precedes a very concentrated, darkly colored wine, with great length and texture. Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1994

Description and Reviews: *** 90 points - Robert Parker *** Reviews "As I wrote last year, Lafite's 1994 is the first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine made at this estate. The only other wine that had such a high Cabernet content was the 1961. The 1994 is not an easy wine to figure out. I felt more positively about it this year than last, but it is an atypically powerful, ferociously tannic, frightfully backward Lafite that appears to require 15-20 years of cellaring before its huge tannin level will...

The property is currently under the careful guidance of Baron Eric who has overseen giant strides in improving what was a rather under-performing château, through extensive research, a new technical team and vineyard restructuring.
