  • Militaria : Medals : Russian : 20th Century
    Militaria : Medals : Russian : 20th Century

The Medal for Bravery was instituted on August 3 1878 and came in four classes. When first instituted was given to NCOs and ORs for outstanding merit on the border (ie principally fighting people like Shamil in the Caucasus and possibly the Turks further west). In 1913, this was renamed the St George medal. The serial number is 309723, proof positive that this is a WW1 issue piece.

This may well have been a larger version of a fund-raising badge similar to the regimental tinnies that the KuK army wore on their hats in WW1. This art work, produced by Ferdinand Optiz (1885-1956) from Prague, is symbolic of the realist school that developed during WW1 and produced some quite strong, dramatic images of the human figure.

A possible recipient for this medal is Captain James Waterhouse. The 1868 Indian Army List shows JW as Supdt. Photographic Branch in the Surveyor General's Department in Roorkee, 23.7.66. In his time he was highly esteemed for his portraits of indigenous people. He became Major General in 1899 and retired from service in 1904. Arguably, he stands in the front rank of pioneers of Indian photography.

This is the sterling silver version issued in 1945 to Canadian troops for service overseas in World War 2. It carried the normal ribbon for the British example, sadly missing.

This fine buckle (the pair is missing) has a French mint acceptance stamp in the shape of a boar's head, which came in in 1838. This does not necessarily relate to the date of the manufacture of the piece, which, in style terms, is closer to the Napoleonic Wars as, by 1838, buckled shoes had gone out of use except perhaps at court.

These brooches were originally made in Scotland in the 17th century and the style continued almost unchanged to the end of the 19th century, so they are hard to date accurately. However, the style of the hinge and the provision of a loop for a safety chain all point to a later date, unless this is an early brooch that has been remounted later.
