A member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists since 1989, and a Trustee since 1992, he was responsible for the RSMA's book A Celebration of Marine Art and The Tall Ship in Art. The whole of England was outraged when it was suggested the ship be scrapped following the Napoleonic wars, so she was reprieved and became the stationary flagship of the commander-in-chief. In 1922 the Victory underwent a comprehensive restoration paid for out of donations. She was the opened to the public as a memorial.
