Our 1966 French visit and a chance encounter and recommendation led us to the Loire and Vouvray. We visited the caves there and sampled a free bottle or so of this Chenin Blanc and left with just two; as said elsewhere, guilt still pervades of opportunity wasted but, the encounter and recommendation are still much cherished. A little thinner than the more expensive Tesco Vouvray but flavoursome, satisfying and highly quaffable; a delight for "every day" drinking. A little sweet for some, ignore...

The gorgeous floral Vouvray Brut should be sampled with a gobload of wild strawberries. This cuvée was traditionally known as pétillant. The base wine for the Brut is the tendre which undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle with the residual sugar of the wine. The estate calls this "pétillant naturel". Les Coteaux Tufiers produce our extremely successful Vouvray which is Demi-Sec (medium-dry) made from the Chenin Blanc grape.

Les Grenouilles is a lieu dit at Vernou, and this wine was made from part bought-in grapes, and part from the Carêmes' own organically farmed vines. A delicious example of the demi-sec style, they recommend a variety of food matches from canapés, to spicy dishes, and cheeses.

Strong acidity typical of 2008 is here tempered by 14 grams of residual sugar, making this an off-dry, or 'sec tendre' style, not quite as sweet as demi-sec. Classically styled with vivid freshness, and delicious. 2011–2015.
