In 1923, the railways in the UK were rationalised into four big companies - the grouping. The GWR remained almost unchanged and locomotive development unaffected. Dean at the beginning of the 20th century, then Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth were Chief Mechanical Engineers who developed the GWR loco with its unique style. On nationalisation in 1947 GWR loco's were the only ones to retain their pre-nationalisation numbers.

The post-war Labour government was elected on a pledge to nationalise Britains key industries. The British Transport Commission took control of the national rail network on the 1st of January 1948, forming the British Raiwlays Board to manage the system. The board appointed Robert Riddles as its chief mechanical engineer, charging him with the provision of motive power suitable for use throughout Britain. The 64xx class was created in 1932, a throughly modernised locomotive deisgn specifically created to replace older, but generally similar locomotives on branchline and suburban passenger duties. All forty of the 6400 class were fitted for auto-train working, the 0-6-0 panniers being able to handle up to four trailers when needed, a load which would have taxed the cabailities of the smaller 0-4-2 'auto tanks'. The similar 54xx class being built around the same time had larger driving wheels and were...

The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the south west and west of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament in 1835, and ran its first trains in 1838. It was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel who chose a broad gauge of 7 ft 0 1 / 4 in, but from 1854 a series of amalgamations saw it also operate 4 ft 8 1 / 2 in standard-gauge trains; the last broad-gauge services were operated in 1892. The GWR was the...

6639 was completed at Swindon in September 1928, joining the fleet of these locomotives based at Newport Ebbw Junction shed. Before nationalisation 6639 had moved east to Severn Tunnel Junction, where the powerful 56 class tank engines were often used to assist heavy trains through the tunnel to Patchway (Bristol). Although still at Severn Tunnel in 1950 6639 was withdrawn in October 1963 from Leamington Spa shed where 56xx engines were used on banking duties and a variety of local trip freights...

The side mounted pannier tank design engines were a distinctive feature of the GWR, offering the ability to utilise the efficient belpaire firebox while retaining access to the cylinders, rods and valve gear between the frames without a significant loss of water capacity. Developed from the older designs of saddle tank, many of which had been adapted with pannier tanks to accomodate new belpaire boilers, a small number of GWR 57xx class locomotives sold to...
