Is it simply...

The instinct to seek perfection in human affairs is as old as Western Civilisation; sometimes it is claimed that the perfect society is lost in the past, or is very distant in the future or across the hills, and sometimes utopia is seen as achievable in our own time, by the adoption of a particular political programme. The great strength of John Carey's anthology of utopian writing, though at times also a significant weakness, is that he is highly suspicious of the entire enterprise; it is not insignificant...

The water does not flow through the panel very fast (as the pipes are very small) but that is sort of a good thing as it allows the water to heat up a lot on its journey through the collector. It does take a while to heat up a 5 gallon bucket of water, I ended up building an insulated return bucket that was all black and sealed on the top except for the port where the water tube enters. This kept the returned hot water hot long enough to be of use. I let this guy run for a couple of hours one hot...

This book is based on the designer's articles, which appeared in Model Engineer in 1982 and 1983, duly amended in the light of subsequent history, with pictures re-scanned (plus extras) and newly laid out. The author assumed that such an engine...

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little...

The wind has been used to power machines capable of grinding corn, pumping water and producing electricity for hundreds years. There are records of Persian and Japanese wind machines as long ago as 200 BC. Wind power probably has its origin in the ancient civilisations of China, Tibet, India, Afghanistan, and Persia. The first written evidence of the use of wind turbines is that of Hero of Alexandria, who in the third or second century BC described a simple horizontal-axis wind turbine. From contemporary...

Nikola Tesla is famous for the Tesla Coil, but another of his inventions is the subject of this book and had nothing to do with electricity, other than as a possible means of generating it. This was his Disc Turbine for which a British Patent, which also covered a compressor variant, was granted in 1910. Unlike a conventional turbine, in which the rotor consists of bladed segments, in Tesla’s machine these were replaced by discs, working on the concept of flowing...
