The work of Justine Smith is concerned with the concept of money and how it touches almost every aspect of our lives. She is interested in money as a conduit of power and also in the value systems with which we surround it. On a physical level a banknote is just a piece of paper, but it is what a banknote actually represents that is central to Smith’s work. Through her collages, prints and sculptures she examines our relationship with money on a political, moral and social level.
Each image is available as a giclee print with silkscreen varnish, measuring 13.5 x 16.5 inches and from a signed edition of 75, and features images of the world’s most iconic half marathon, cigarette cards and vintage photographs of runners, medals, posters and much more. The majority of found images and objects Peter Blake has appropriated are from the Great North Run archives or sourced from the North East, but the finished images have a distinctly international feel. Interestingly, Peter Blake...

In his retrospective, Stoddart explained ‘I’m convinced that a lot of photography is almost a sexual act…In my pictures there is a story in every frame but they don’t have a beginning, middle or end. It’s up to the person looking at them.’
Tobias Houlton graduated in Sculpture in 2009 from Edinburgh College of Art, where he established his skills in figurative drawing, and developed and enthusiasm for the age old process of bronze casting.
As art director Sally creates each edition of BLAG in an non-formulaic manner, using a number of influences from reflections, light, shadows, energies, high-end fashion to cubism. She provokes the idea that a magazine shouldn't retain strict rules such as limited word counts or images, but chooses to let each story flow naturally – that said her design style is incredibly meticulous. She creates bespoke thematic art based pieces to run throughout each edition from abstract to script poster inspired...
From his early days as an accomplished glamour snapper, Bob became an obsessive print-maker and serious craftsman, still happy to do rubber shoots for a sexagenarian gentleman pornographer called The Commander in between more ambitious commercial shoots or purely artistic studies of rocks, buildings and everyday objects. However, this direction that he had dedicated a decade to appeared to backfire on him when rubber party dresses became synonymous with bottle-blonde bimbos and sex shops. Away from...
Fallis' DNA DL90, a sculpture made from supermarket shopping trolleys, is on show at Newcastle upon Tyne's Forth Square until 2014. The artist comments, 'shopping trolleys are everywhere, and have become a real symbol of modern society and today's consumer culture'. Her sculpture also alludes to scientific investigations into the designer baby, and the lengths society is prepared to go to ensure a perfect specimen.
James’ photo based paintings of trendy youths are intervened by helpings of obnoxious neon slashes, cuts and splashes comprising of pop elements such as cartoons, graphics and text, to create his distinctive style. These combinations of techniques and styles collide as cartoon and plastic clash with James’ figurative flesh and bone elements.

XuCheng’s paintings have been noted for their precision of detail, although the subject matter is usually ambiguous; crevasses of colourful shade offset voluptuous waves in images which imply everything from nature, to water, to the human figure. It may be this sense of intrigue which has been recognised by collectors as far as Canada, France and Italy – whilst Kounter Kulture, London represents the artist’s first exhibition outside of China, his reputation has preceded him, and his work is already...
Swedish artist John Philip Edstrand is a contemporary painter working in multiple techniques, including drawing, sculpture, photography & digital images. By fusing them all together into his unique paintings, he explores the boundaries between painted surface and three dimensional objects. Having paintings long history in mind where so many gestures and expressions have been seen, John Philip Edstrand strives to reach further with the painted medium. Combining sculptural form with motif in a playful...
James Turrell deals with explorations in light and space that speak to his viewers without words, with the tangible force of an awakening. His studies in perceptual and orbital psychology are evident as he attempts to ‘create an atmosphere that can be consciously plumbed with seeing, like the wordless thought that comes from looking in a fire.’ Turrell’s ability to place viewers in a realm of true experience has been praised internationally, with the artist winning a number of awards – including...
Linda Lencovic explores feelings of loss and symptoms of melancholia that can be seen on a large scale within contemporary western society. Exploring wide-spread melancholia by evidencing the unknown, a finely articulated game of belief construction is portrayed. Uncanny figures are seen transcending the everyday - engaging in ephemeral moments of magic, madness or miracle as they try to fill an unnamed loss.

They joined forces in their university days at Nottingham Polytechnic and since then have continued to work together, sharing the same fascination with the media and advertising industries; and together have tried being poor, starving artists while Britart became increasingly hip. Noble and Webster utilise a number of different media to visually challenge the relations between the spectacular, the serious and the entertaining.
Failes work involves playing around with images and layouts, 'recycling' images over and over again which makes both a social comment on the society that we live in and makes 'icons' out of throwaway images. Their iconic paste-up's can be found around the world and they have recently garnered massive critical acclaim with sell out shows in New York and London.
Dan Baldwin has won international critical praise for his provocative artwork, which – in his own words - is ‘about the fine line between the sinister and the beautiful.’ Works feature candy colour, butterflies and childhood cartoons amidst guns and razors - and this mixed media approach manages to inject a shot of realism into images which often seem otherworldly.
It is important to Charlotte Stubbs’ that the imaginary worlds she creates fully immerse the viewer. Often this means using lighting and sound to create a more dramatic atmosphere that borders on the theatrical, often sharing the wonder that is found in children’s fantasy novels such as Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia. Photography and miniature sculptures are also key components within her practice and are often created alongside larger installations. These help Charlotte Stubbs...

Renowned for clashing with the authorities, in 1988 police ordered the removal from sale the magazine Shashin Jidai, which featured the Japanese photographer's works; obscenity charges were levelled against the artist during a 1992 exhibition and 1993 saw the arrest of a gallery curator who dared to display Araki's graphic nudes. One gets the sense that Araki is a rebel bucking the system.

She has painted numerous characters and celebrities including Leeloo, of The Fifth Element, and Jane Smith, of Mr and Mrs Smith, as well as creating studies of the cast of Desperate Housewives. Increasingly acclaimed, the BBC commissioned a picture of Cindy Beale which featured as a major plot device in a Friday night episode of EastEnders, having bought the pictures from Josie’s MA show which depicted characters from the show.
Brigit Collins paintings are greatly influenced by the work of artists such as the photographer Martin Parr and the painter Edward Hopper. Each of her paintings has a central focus to them, often a building. The paintings depict scenes that she has seen on her travels or whilst on holiday and contain elements that would normally be considered drab and uninteresting, but for her, when viewed on a brilliant sunny day are striking and uplifting.
Martin Maloney has been crucial to the recent rise of an emerging Young British Art generation. His expressive and colourful paintings have reintroduced a sense of the romantic into contemporary art: here, through his wonderfully garish illuminated sculptures. Maloney's work has been shown in landmark exhibitions such as Sensation at London's Royal Academy (alongside fellow Goldsmiths graduate and Opus featured artist Peter Davies ), New Neurotic Realism at the Saatchi Gallery, and Die Young Stay...

It is apparent Cook admired English visionary artist Stanley Spencer, as his influence is evident in her bold and bulky figures in her compositions. Another influence was Edward Burra who painted sleazy cafes, nightclubs and prostitutes. However Cook refused to paint the sinister aspects of life, instead she chose to depict happy, flamboyant and extrovert characters that live life to the full in situations which we can all recognise in today’s culture. The appeal of Cook’s work lies in their directness...
Heavily influenced by metaphysics, the alchemical sciences of the past and popular psychology, Teresa Duck’s works become vehicles by which to explore intangible and abstract concepts and create ways in which to merge aspects of solid reality and abstract philosophical ideas in a definite space. As a result, these works are very much influenced by the archetypal imagery of the past and present, carrying with it as it does the assumptions and standards which, though often explicitly unrecognised,...

Decorative elements used in Henrik Simonsen’s work are inspired by 18th and 19th century wallpapers as well as Japanese and Chinese screen painting and fabrics. These are at times obscured or revealed amidst a contemporary take on the minutely observed taxonomies of naturalist still life. This historical attempt to tame nature in architectural interiors is punctuated by pours and splatters referencing the irreverent elements of street art – a sort of mental graffiti betraying feelings too unkempt...
Danish artist Henrik Simonsen engages with a Western tradition of flower paintings and still life, approaching it in a contemporary way. His charcoal drawings and paintings depict unspoiled common field plants and flowers, rather than the cultivated blooms usually found in traditional flower paintings. Simonsen’s Scandinavian background is stylistically evident in his economy of colour and line, and his use of space and light, along with the dominance of nature as the subject matter. Although delicately...

Beginning by documenting the small dorps or villages of rural South Africa, Ballen’s photography moved on in the late 1980s to their inhabitants. By the mid 1990s his subjects began to act where previously his pictures, however troubling, fell firmly into the category of documentary photography, his work then moved into the realms of fiction.
Dan Baldwin’s vibrant pieces are punctuated with darker motifs, a skull might look over a pastel perfect scene, blurring the divide between good and evil. These opposing combinations can shock viewers, but may also add a touch of humour, albeit dark. Dan Baldwin’s style has a unique aesthetic which is difficult to categorise. Working by instinct, it can change dramatically depending on the subject matter he is exploring and the emotions he is channelling.

The artist has said that he wants his paintings to give ‘the apparently innocuous or trivial, significance and meaning.’ These works challenge us to view our surroundings with a heightened sense of imagination, questioning the familiar to re-assess our preconceptions about the nature of our world. These curiously unsettling images simultaneously convey anxiety, hope, and the artist’s love of paint.

Walton Ford creates watercolour paintings in the style of 19th century natural history drawings, depicting an array of animals, most notably monkeys and bird species. These paintings are reminiscent of naturalists such as John J. Audubon or Edward Lear. However, Ford’s life-size illustrations diverge from this tradition as they anthropomorphize animals, presenting them in unnatural settings and human scenarios. His fantasy scenes are simultaneously amusing and unsettling, carrying a nightmarish charm...

Chloe Early works with an abstracted urban landscape background placing interchangeable motifs such as divers, balloons, stars and herds of animals, always hinting at the opposing themes of apocalypse and redemption. There is a sense that this is a post apocalyptic world, but ultimately these are positive paintings and prints, redemption exists, nature is alive, people are not alone. Chloe Early shows us a world deconstructed and put back together in an unsettling way, but there is also a sense of...
