The Actaea (Cimicifuga) is an under-used plant with tremendous potential. The feathery foliage is particularly decorative in this variety, as it has a strong deep red colouring, and, in late Summer, produces tall spikes of white flowers with a pink blush. Originates from a cross made in the 1800's by the Chelsea Nurseryman James Colville, between the two species Gladiolus tristis and Gladiolus cardinalis. This white form of G.x colvillei was first introduced by the same Nursery in 1826, and is true to the original type. A beautiful 'heirloom' variety, these have slightly pink stamens set against a pure white background. These show some degree of hardiness, and may perform well outdoors in a sheltered location - but these will do better in a cold greenhouse...
