The Ultimate Wine Record Book — £12.95
One of the first things we all had to learn as budding wine lovers was to remember exactly what it was that we were tasting and drinking. It's only by slowly building up a memory of grape varieties, styles, country and regional traits that you can begin to build up a pattern in your head to be able to recognize wines in the future. So, unless you have an incredibly powerful memory, it helps to record your wine experience in one place. There's nothing more frustrating than buying a wine you absolutely...

Wines of Lebanon — £14.50
Viticulture in Lebanon was introduced 6000 years ago by the Phoenicians who traded their wines throughout the Mediterranean and planted the vine in southern Europe. The Bekaa Valley is almost frost and disease free, with long mild summers and wet winters. More often in the news as a flashpoint in middle eastern politics, the Bekaa valley has long been home to extensive vineyards. It is mainly due to the persistence of one man, Serge Hochar of Château Musar, who has persisted in the face of adversity...
Billecart-Salmon Rose Brut — £47.50
Our favourite 'salmon-pink' owes its richly fruity, 'biscuity' character to the predominance of Pinot Noir in the blend. Founded in 1818 by Nicolas-François Billecart, this aristocratic estate is renowned for producing Champagnes that age gracefully over many years. Adding to their own select parcels of vines, they buy fruit from growers in the Marne Valley and the Montagne de Reims. High quality protocols include long fermentations using estate-cultured yeasts.
2003 Chateau Puy Blanquet,Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion — £15.99

2007 Smith Woodhouse, Vintage Port, En Primeur, 6 bottles per case — £149.00
The 2007 vintage in the Douro was an exceptional year where the wines produced were universally expressive for their purity of the fruit flavours which were of a standard not seen since the 1955 vintage. This is not to say that 2007 is the very best vintage since 1955, but it is a vintage that stands out from others for its approachable elegance

Intense lemon, melon and white peach flavours; another stunningly fresh, characterful Chardonnay.
2007 The Adnams Selection White Burgundy, Cuvee Paul Talmard, Magnum — £19.99
It has to be pretty special for us to put our names to it - and this white Burgundy from the gleaming, steel tank-lined cellars of the ever-reliable Talmard family (they're based in the Mâcon town of Chardonnay, so ought to know a thing or two about the grape) truly is 'les genoux de l' abeille' . Stunningly clean, fresh and characterful, with intense white peach, lemon and melon flavours, it's sophisticated and versatile, perfect as an apéritif or with chicken, fish or salads.
2007 Marques de Borba Red, Jao Portugal Ramos, Alentejo — £8.75
Jao Portugal Ramos is a one man dynamo who has created a substantial winery, some 250 hectare of his own vineyards with even more under contract, in the Alentejo that is one of the benchmarks of Portuguese wines. Innovative yet mindful of good traditions his winery is a place where curiously novel methods of getting more colour into his wines stand alongside old fashioned foot treading lagars.

Predominantly Semillon, with around 2% Sauvignon. About a third goes through new oak, giving this 07 big structure underpinning apricot and spicey vanilla tones. Seville oranges and Botyrtis, and a sweet richness on the finish.

His property in Nantes (the Atlantic end of the Loire), is home to our top Muscadet, oyster beverage nonpareil. This is his finest cuvée, pale, lemony yellow in colour, crisp and minerally fresh, with that broad, slightly creamy character you only find in the finest 'sur lie' Muscadet (wine left to gain complexity on its yeast 'lees').
2008 Macon Milly-Lamartine, Comte Lafon, En Primeur, 12 bottles per case — £115.00
2008 produced 30% less in terms of quantity, but the knock-on effect of this has been a greater concentration of aromas, underscored by excellent natural acidity. All will benefit from 18 months bottle age, the Clos du Fours a little longer. These are all exciting and delicious wines of great individuality, and my favourite word authenticity!
Gotas de Plata, Rosado Brut, La Mancha — £6.99
Tastes as good as it looks: deliciously fresh strawberry flavour and a moreish dry finish. A must for summer.
2005 Chateau de Beaucastel, Chateauneuf-du-Pape — £49.99

Green Point Sparkling Rose, Domaine Chandon — £14.99
Plumb in the middle of Victoria's historic Yarra Valley, Green Point earned its title because the property remained verdant longer than any other after the grass-searing onset of summer. Run by Moet & Chandon since 1986, the focus is, as you'd expect, on classic fizz. Their fastest-seller is this Chardonnay-Pinot Noir, a paradigm of New World elegance, with small, persistent bubbles and creamy flavours of white peaches, honey and toasted hazelnuts.

John and Brigid Forrest have been quietly making themselves into the foremost private estate in the famous Marlborough region of NZ. Their extensive vineyards are to be found in the valley's prime locations and this gives them the ability to blend wines to a consistently high standard. Not content with producing wines from just the one region they have aquired land to the south in Otago and Waitaki and also in the Hawke's Bay region of the North Island. Diversity and quality are theirs.
The Adnams Selection Fino, Pale Dry Sherry — £7.99
Re-invention is key at Domecq. Irish founder Patrick Murphy left the place to his commercial advisor Juan Haurie in 1791, who then had to supply Napoleon's invading army. Bankruptcy ensued, staved off by Juan's aristocratic relative, Don Pedro Domecq Lembeye. His descendant Don Alvaro has started afresh in an artisanal way, buying Jerez' historic Pilar Aranda cellar. Alvaro now makes our Fino: dry and elegant, with classic piercing savoury freshness. Serve chilled with nuts or smoked fish.

2008 Chardonnay, Gouguenheim — £6.99
This oak-aged Chardonnay is one of the finest we've tasted from Argentina, with buttery aromas, a touch of citrus, and elegant oak. We also think it's great with sesame chicken. Mendoza leading light Susana Balbo crafted it from the impeccable fruit of Patricio Gouguenheim's 'Valle Escondido' ('Hidden Valley') vineyards in high, cool Tupungato, where grape-growing conditions are just about perfect. Doubly-rewarding for her; she'd urged him to invest his inheritance there in the first
2005 Sangiovese/Shiraz 'Contour 4', Coriole, McLaren Vale — £9.99
The McLaren Vale is unique in boasting a very high percentage of pre-phyloxera vineyards. The Lloyd family set up Coriole estate in 1967 and the sons of the family, Hugh and Paul, are now running the business. Shiraz is what they, and the rest of the valley, major on but since the mid-nineties they have planted Sangiovese extensively believing that the texture of this grape is a perfect match with the power of Shiraz.
