Crank 2 

After falling out of a plane and surviving in the last film, Jason Statham  finds his heart stolen and replaced with a machine that he needs to keep charged by shocking himself with an electric current to live. One of the most insane films of recent years; makes almost every other action film look like Merchant-Ivory .

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 

The fourth film in the massively popular Indiana Jones saga sees Harrison Ford  return as the world's most bad-ass archeologist, joined this time by Shia LeBeouf  to stop evil Russian Cate Blanchett  from getting some alien skulls .


Set in a future world where convicted felons are forced to compete to the death in a live, interactive videogame, Gerard Butler  rebels against the system.

GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra 

Action movie based on the popular cartoon/toy series , with Joseph Gordon Levitt  as a young Cobra Commander  on the rise.

Die Hard

The Matrix 

Though it has since been overshadowed slightly by the lameness of its sequels, the original Matrix was a classic of the genre. Keanu Reeves  learns the world is all a simulation, and he's the only one who can save humanity.

First Blood

Of course, for many people, action films mean one name: Arnold Schwarzenegger . The body-builder turned actor turned politician defined the genre for over a decade, and starred in some of the biggest action movies of all time.

The Terminator 

The 1985 film which introduced Schwarzenegger to an eternally grateful public, he plays a time travelling cyborg sent to kill the woman who will give birth to the leader of a great future leader . Directed by James Cameron .

Terminator 2 

The blockbuster sequel to the original Terminator, in which Arnie returns as a now good cyborg sent to protect John Connor from another, evil, cyborg.

Total Recall 

The second of Paul Verhoeven's  dystopian science fiction satires and based on a Philip K Dick  short story, Arnie plays a mild mannered construction worker who, after a trip to a memory implantation company, discovers that he may in fact be someone else. Wackiness ensues.

Conan the Barbarian 

Schwarzenegger's first starring role, in which he plays a medieval warrior seeking revenge for the massacre of his tribe. Based on the popular comic series .
