Antiseptics and disinfectants  are also called as antimicrobials  and sanitizers . They are germicidal solutions that are widely used for killing bacteria immediately on contact.   Antiseptics kill the bacteria living on tissues and skin while disinfectants kill the bacteria on the surface of the objects. 

Types of Antiseptics and Disinfectants

The selection of antiseptics and disinfectants depends on the type of virus or bacteria and how they are spread. Antimicrobial activity, instrument compatibility and user acceptability are other important factors that determine the selection of antiseptics and disinfectants.  

• Alcohols  are low efficiency disinfectants and a skin antiseptic that can kill various pathogens  but within ten minutes of contact time, but get inactivated when contacted with organic matter.
• Non-bleach formula  is used in most of the households  as disinfectants as they can kill various micro organisms and organic debris such as including E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, MRSA and the flu.
• Chlorhexidines  are less toxic on tissues that they are used as skin antiseptics  and even as an additive in drinking water. Found to be effective against various bacteria, yeast, fungus and certain viruses.
• Domesticated iodines  are also used as skin antiseptics and can kill a huge range of microorganisms.
• Tea Tree Oil  is a broad spectrum antiseptic and effective biocide against bacteria, fungi and insects.
• Antiseptic ointment  with local anesthetic soothes and prevents infection.
• Antiseptic-disinfectants contain chloroxylenol  that kills bacteria and provides protection against germs.
• Antiseptics that combine essential oils  extracted from plants are used for treating fungal infections  of the nails.
