Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a public holiday that is usually celebrated the day after Christmas (December 26th), and is a time for people to give to those less fortunate. This charity centered holiday is celebrated by many countries in the Commonwealth of Nations, including Canada and Australia, and dates back to the Middle Ages. Boxing Day got its name from the tradition of employers anonymously putting money in a "Christmas box" made of clay which would then be smashed open by the employees the day after. The money would be divided among the workers. Today, when people say "Christmas box", they are referring to the extra bonus or gift given to workers and employees. In most countries, Boxing Day means lots of sales and great bargains (similar to Black Friday), as well as an important day in terms of sports. It also means a day of goodwill and spending quality time with family and friends.
