LED Bulbs Buying Guide

Light emitting diodes or LED technology has become more widespread in all types of electronics over recent years. LEDs are often used as a replacement for traditional tungsten filament lamps and halogen lamps which require large amounts of energy to operate. Since LEDs convert the energy passed through them into light, they need only 10% of the energy that conventional household filament bulbs use.

Types of LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are of two major types:

  • Floods or Spotlights: These are used in lighting applications that demand directional lighting such as track lighting, flood/spotlighting and recessed lighting.
  • Globe Shape LED Bulbs: These LED bulbs are used when you require the illumination of an entire area. This is achieved by the use of a lens at the top of the bulb to disperse the light at a wider angle.

Features of LED Light Bulbs

  • LED bulbs have a long-life lasting for up to 100,000 hours.
  • LED bulbs are available with narrow, medium and wide-angle lenses.
  • LED Bulbs are available in a range of colours such as amber, orange, pink, red, cyan, blue, royal blue and green.

Applications of LED Bulbs

  • You can use LED bulbs for home lighting, cars, residential lighting, commercial lighting, accent lighting, reading lights, display lighting, desk lamps, business lighting, security lamps, walkway lighting, hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. LEDs can be used in almost any situation where lighting is required.

Benefits of LED Bulbs

  • LED bulbs can withstand a greater amount of vibration, shock and temperature variations compared to standard light bulbs.
  • LED bulbs produce flicker free light as compared to the light produced by incandescent light bulbs.
  • Modern LED bulbs work on voltages of between 2-4 volts.

Factors to Consider

Before you buy LED bulbs, consider the following points:

  • Bulb lifetime
  • Colour
  • Beam angles
  • Manufacturer warranty
