Light Controls

If you have ever read The Adventures of God--aka the Bible--then you know how the first fitting room light switch  came to be: it is a product of the genesis in which our sinful ancestors--Adam and Eve--co-starred. Adam and Eve became infamous for the apple eating escapes that resulted in the shame of nakedness. But was the shame just a product of poor lighting? It can be said that the two may not have been so ashamed by--and in fact may have been rather delighted with--the sudden awareness of the naked body, but in foreseeing this outcome, God wired the sun with unflattering light--ah, the real punishment.

To this day, unable to air-brush reality, we suffer under sunlight's wrath. But slowly, we are learning some manipulative tactics of our own, such as artificial light manipulation. Little light switches give you control over a given area; they allow us to choose illumination, slight illumination, or obliteration. We have electric power--take that, God.

Switch Replacement Tips

  • Before working with electricity, check to see if a permit is needed to do so.
  • When it is time to get started on the project, turn off the power to the circuit on which you plan to work--you can confirm that it is off with a circuit tester .
  • Lock out the panel box--this way no one can accidentally turn the power back on while you are working.
  • Wear protection goggles  and a dust mask  to protect yourself from harmful particles.
  • Wire the new switch in the same way the old one was wired.
  • To avoid overloading the circuit, consult a licensed electrician.
  • Have your work checked by an inspector.

Basic Switch Types

Single Pole Switches

Single pole switches are made to control light sources from a single location. They are the simplest and most commonly used light controls.

Double Pole Switches

Double pole switches can receive two hot wires, which is why they are often used to control 240-volt receptacles (outlets) and appliances.

Three-Way Switches

Three-way switches are usually used to provide two separate switching points for a single fixture.

Dimmer Switches

These speciality switches allow you to increase or decrease the brightness of an incandescent light. They can come with control knobs, sliders or toggles.

Time Delay Switches

These switches have timers which allow you to set a period of time that the circuit will remain on.

Time clock Switches

These switches can be programmed to turn themselves on or off. They are a great way to make it appear as if you are home when you need to go on a trip--or if you are just out of the house a lot.

Pilot Light Switches

These switches have a light to indicate when the circuit is active, so you'll know at a glance.

Receptacle Switches

Receptacle switches allow you to have both a switch and a receptacle in one box.

Energy Savers

LED Motion-Sensor Lights : This is a really cool energy saving product. The LED Motion Sensor Light turns on automatically at dark, or can be set to light when motion is sensed. It can be bought in a battery powered portable  model that does not require wiring or an outlet; this portable version, however, does not provide enough light to illuminate an entire room.
