Outdoor Christmas Lights

Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, Christmas lights  are a must-have in Christmas decorations .  The way you decorate outdoors  for Christmas reveals the Christmas spirit inside of the home!

Before you put up a single string of lights , be sure to plan in advance how you will place them in order to avoid aggravation and mishaps.  Get out the measuring tape  and ladder  and calculate how you will deck out your windows, doors, and shrubbery with outdoor lights, measuring out how many hundreds (or thousands) of bulbs  you will be needing. Lighted wreaths  are the best choice for doors; snowmen  and santa  decorations are fun to put in windows.

Peruse these additional tips when trimming your house for the holidays.

  • Be sure to add on a few extra feet in length for the roof pitch.
  • Outdoor trees and bushes are typically about 50 lights per foot of height.
  • Strings of lights come in packs from 25 lights to 200, so break out your extension cords  and buy accordingly.
  • Purchase the strings that can be plugged into one another for extra length.
  • Plan to use shorter strands, but more quantity of lights.  If one light bulb  burns out, it will be much easier to replace a shorter strand.
  • Think about what colours  and schemes you will use.  Brights or whites?  Flashy or subdued?  Will you include any lawn decorations ?
  • Consider placing your Christmas lights  on a timer if possible so your decorations won't burn out by night-time.

Types of Lights

You're all set to get creative with your house.  We all know that stringing up the lights outside of the house can be a hassle, but think of the beautiful reward that all will see (and adore) when it's done.

Vintage Christmas Bulbs

There's something iconic about the bulky bulbs. They may not be as intense as LED bulbs, but they have character.

Icicles

These lights spruce up the home. Sometimes string lights get dull, so if you change up the attached shapes, suddenly they're not too shabby.

Mini Lights

These lights are a nice addition to garland around the front of your house as well as any columns and banisters.

Net Lights

These go on bushes and trees without misshaping or hurting the shrubs. There is absolutely no hassle putting them on or taking them off.

Garland Lights

These look best wrapped around entrance-ways and hung from fences. For additional accents, alternate white and coloured lights with berries or pine combs in the garland.

Solar Lights

Are you eco-friendly? Solar lights won't waste electricity and they're still pretty bright. It's a win-win situation.

Rope Lights

Rope lights are not just for use at tacky Carribean-inspired restaurants.; they can also be used as an alternative for string lights. The biggest benefit is that the bulbs are covered from the weather.

Fairy Lights

These lights are similar to micro lights except they're not quite as obtrusive. The bulbs are smaller and less blatant in appearance.

Lanterns ,Lamps , and Candles

If you want to be a little more flashy, you can go with any of these choices. They're quite bright and colourful, so they may tickle your holiday fancies.

Pre-Made Figures

Pre-made Christmas figures ,plastic characters , and pre-lit structures of wire make for a nice outdoor presentation with minimum stress.  And you can use the extra time that you save to get a head start on some shopping!

Snowflakes  and Stars

Snowflakes are an overall holiday thing, not specifically Christmas. That means you can put them up when winter starts and you can be lazy and leave them up until winter ends.

Santa Claus

What's Christmas without good old Saint Nick? Present-less and sad, that's what it is. Be sure you get at least one Santa light to bring out the holiday spirit.

Angels

In case any of us forgot that the true purpose of the holidays is not the hot cocoa, tree, and gifts, there are light-up angels to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.

Light-up Reindeer

Reindeer are graceful additions to your outdoor décor. They are a staple for the season and can be set up in any number of ways--standing, grazing, dashing, you name it!

Light Christmas Trees

Some fake trees care pre-configured with light-tipped plastic pine needles. Others are string lights that hang from a star. You can make a Christmas tree-like cone with those.
