Forward Cristiano Ronaldo is integral to Portugal's World Cup hopes

Despite a team packed full of individual talent, Portugal made very hard work of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cupscraping through narrowly with a playoff win against Bosnia-Herzegovina. How they will fair against stronger opposition at the tournament has been a major talking point with much of the nation's expectations being landed squarely on the shoulders of superstar Real Madrid  forward Cristiano Ronaldo . With injuries to key players Jose Bosingwa  and Pepe, Ronaldo will need some support and Portugal be looking to the likes of Nani  and Simao  to step up and deliver on the biggest stage of all.

Eusebio. A little bit special.

Portugal have had their share of football geniuses over the past. The player most commonly heralded as Portugal's greatest ever was Eusebio  - a European and World player of the year blessed with unbelievable technical ability. The 'Black Panther' was a European Cup Winner with Benfica  and in 1966 his goals fired Portugal to third place in the World Cup. More recently Portugal's 'Golden Generation' - a squad that featured the talents of Luis Figo ,Rui Costa  and Fernando Couto  that dominated the FIFA  youth championships in the late eighties and early nineties - were blessed with ability but were never destined to make it count on the international stage.

When Portugal Play

If you're planning to have company on the day of the big match a great way to get everyone behind the national team is serve Portuguese themed food. Portugal has wonderful foods to choose from. Caldo Verde - a green soup with chourçio, makes for a great starter or snack. Piri-Piri sauce goes particularly well with chicken and has a great spicy flavour. For dessert, it can only be the famous Pasteis de Nata, the tasty and addictive little custard tarts. There are hundreds of Portuguese recipes to choose from that your guests are bound to love as they cheer on Portugal in the World Cup.
