Boxing gloves are worn by fighters during boxing matches and are designed to protect the hands of the fighter from injury. They reduce the striking power of the fighter and thus lessen the probability of brain damage and facial injury of the opponent.
A boxing glove can weigh from 8 to 16 ounces, and it is necessary that you choose the one that suits you and your needs the best.
Speed Gloves: These boxing gloves are made of light vinyl or leather and are designed to protect the hands against damage when doing light training such as working on a stand mounted speed bag. They weigh close to 8 to 10 ounces.
Bag Gloves: They are far better cushioned than speed gloves and are designed to take more force and carry out heavier work. They are perfect if you are a non-sparer, and you are into boxing training. They weigh about 8 to 12 ounces.
Sparring Gloves and Training Gloves: As the name suggests, they are meant for active fighters who are involved in serious boxing, training and sparring. They are well padded and are structured such that they protect both the athletes from serious injury during practice sessions. Training gloves use Velcro and not laces because it helps in the easy removal of the gloves.
Professional Fight Gloves: This is the professional version of the sparring gloves, and they are not padded as the normal ones. They are often used for competitions and are laced up and sealed with a tape before the match.
Boxing Gloves for Amateurs: These are usually red or blue fighting gloves with a white scoring area. The white area allows the judge to keep track of the movements and the scores.
Most fighters use boxing gloves tied with laces for snug fit, it is just like you tie up your shoe. The main advantage of using Velcro straps as a fastening system is that you can easily put on and remove the gloves yourself.
The presence of thumb attachment in these gloves helps prevent a lot of thumb injuries and accidental eye gouges.
