Sports and Outdoor Backpacks Buying Guide

There are a variety of options of backpacks available for all outdoor and sport expeditions. Your outdoor backpack can vary in size, shape, material, and style depending on the trip.  Selecting a functional backpack with the right features that suit your outdoor activity will make it an even more pleasurable experience.

Tips To Choose the Right Backpack

  • Function: It is essential that your backpack fit comfortably with minimum strain on your shoulders and back. All backpacks come with shoulder straps. They should be wider and more heavily padded for larger straps. In addition, there should also be a chest strap to keep your shoulders from pulling backwards. A hip belt is another important feature on heavy backpacks.  A frame sheet covering the back of the pack is an added advantage. This will prevent any large items in the pack from poking into your back.
  • Features: All backpacks have inner and outer pockets. Outer pockets are ideal for items that you want to get to quickly and easily. Inner pockets can be used for the remainder of your supplies. External equipment straps and bungee cords are also incorporated into some backpacks. Some backpacks have zippers on the top, back and even on the bottom. A bottom zipper is really useful if you need to stock up on your mountaineering equipment. You may also need a few compartments to store a mobile phone, water bottles and maps and so on.
  • Size: The capacity of each backpack will be measured in cubic inches of space. The typical day pack will range from 500 to 2,000 cubic inches. Mid-size packs can be as large as 4,000 cubic inches. Anything larger than 4,000 cubic inches is considered an expedition pack.

Different Types of Sports and Outdoor Backpacks

  • Hydration Packs: They have a capacity of up to 10 litres and carry a water bladder with a drinking tube.
  • Day Packs: These packs can carry volume ranging from 15 to 35 litres. They are used for one day trips and are typically small-sized backpacks with shoulder straps and no hip belt.
  • Midsize Packs: These backpacks can carry volume ranging from 35 to 70 litres. These smaller packs are also ideal for day hikes and to carry cameras or books.
  • Expedition Packs: These backpacks have a capacity of 60 litres and above. These full-sized backpacks can carry enough gear to keep you on the trail for weeks.
