Ankle-related injuries are the most common injuries in any sporting activity. Some would think that ample bed rest should be enough in case of a sprained ankle, but that is not the case. Such injuries need compression to reduce swelling. Use of ankle supports decreases the number and severity of these injuries as they temporarily immobilise the ankle, which will be beneficial for the healing process.
Elastic bandage - These flexible ankle supports are used for minor sprains. They prevent ankle injury for those with a weakened joint. They compress the injured area without restricting movement. You can get them in the form of a long bandage or a pull-on sock.
Moderate braces - They are used for ligament injuries. They are used for injuries that cause pain when walking or an injury that causes stiffness and swelling. They have more rigid panels to support the ankle. Velcro and lacing are commonly used for a customised, effective fit.
Maximum support ankle brace - They are mainly used for severe injuries including sprains and ligament ruptures characterised by severe pain, acute swelling and the inability to rotate the ankle. They offer support during rehabilitation by preventing the ankle from rotating inward or outward.
Walking Boot - They are useful for ankle fractures and for post-surgery support and protection. The outer shell is stiff with padding of either a quilted breathable fabric or air-filled cells. The bottom of the boot carries a rocker sole to decrease pressure on the foot. They are fastened with Velcro straps.
