Swim Goggles

Picking out the right goggles is essential when it comes to swimming. You want them to be comfortable, yet still be able to keep all the water out. If you're unable to see under water you're likely to run into a lane line or worse; the wall. Additionally, you'll want to pick out one that will fit your face. The right fit will ensure no leaks, no headaches, and no cuts or marks that are impossible to get rid of. There are a variety of styles to choose from. Whether you're buying for an adult  or child,  there's definitely a pair that will work for you. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when purchasing:

Quick Tips

  • Try them on first without the straps. If they stay on your face for a second or two, they are probably a good fit.
  • Be sure you're not allergic to any materials before purchasing. If you're allergic to foam or latex, you might end up with huge rashes uder your eyes or worse.
  • If they aren't a good fit, tightening the straps won't do any good. Straps that are too tight create headaches.
  • If you have a small head or face, you may want to try children's goggles  to ensure the best fit.
  • For racing goggles, stay away from the ones with larger lenses. While these may be good for keeping out water, they aren't good for being speedy and tend to fall off when you dive off the block.
  • Goggles tend to get foggy, so you may want to purchase some Anti-Fog spray.  You could also try buying anti-fog goggles,  but dipping your goggles in the pool before use also works well too.
  • If you swim outdoors, you may want to purchase tinted goggles . They are great for protecting eyes from the sun.
  • Test out the goggle strap to ensure flexibility. While a thicker elastic band won't break as easily, it isn't that flexible. The goggle strap should match that of a strong rubber band.
  • When purchasing children's goggles, first decide what they are going to use them for.  If they're going to use them for pool play time, ones that have larger lenses. If they are using them in competition definitely get some racing goggles .
  • If you have contacts or wear glasses, you may want prescription goggles . They come in basically the same shapes and styles as regular goggles.
  • Adjust the nose piece. Most people believe the strap is the only way to adjust your goggles, but by adjusting the nose piece you can get a much better fit.
  • You may have to try out a few pairs before you find the right ones for you, so try not to get frustrated.

Types of Goggles

Swedish Style

These googles are good for racing and are likely to stay on during a competition. Since they have no material between the plastic and your face, they are also good for those who are alergic to other materials. Additionally, they can be of high quality, yet they are generally very inexpensive, but require a short adjustment period.

Foam Gasket Style

These tend to be more comfortable than other goggles, since the foam will sort of mold to your face. They won't last as long as other types, though, and will have to be replaced more often. If you're planning on using you're goggles often you may want to try a rubber  pair.

Hard Rubber or Silicone Gasket Style

These are probably the most popular type of goggles. They are highly leak proof and very comfortable. Although they tend to be pricey, the tend to last longer than other types as well. If you're going to be competing and practicing often, you should go with this type over the others.
