War Films Buying Guide

War is hell, but hell can often be very entertaining to watch. Check out some of these war films and see if they make you want to enlist, or maybe just play Call of Duty. 

Recent Releases

Many of the war films to come out in the last couple of years have dealt with the Iraq war, although other conflicts are represented as well.

The Hurt Locker 

The Oscar nominated film stars Jeremy Renner  as an army bomb disposal expert addicted to the adrenaline rush of his high risk job.

Jarhead 

Jake Gyllenhaal  plays an army scout sniper during the Gulf War, going mad with boredom as he waits for his war to begin.

Stop Loss 

Ryan Phillipe  and Joseph Gordon Levitt  star in this film about a war hero who returns home after finishing his our of duty, only to find himself called back up to the field.

The Kingdom 

Jamie Foxx ,Jennifer Garner  and Jason Bateman  are US agents investigating a terrorist bombing in Saudi Arabia.

Rambo 

An aged Sylvester Stallone  returns as John Rambo , kicking ass this time in Burma.

World War 2 Films

More noble and morally black and white than most modern wars, WW2 is the place to go if you're looking for films about heroism and the courage of man.

Saving Private Ryan 

Tom Hanks  is on a mission to find Private Ryan in Spielberg's  classic, opening with one of the most famous battle scenes in film.

A Bridge Too Far 

One of the best British war films, it's a ridiculously star packed epic about the ill-fated attempt to capture several German bridges during World War 2. The final bridge was just too far.

Where Eagles Dare 

Richard Burton  and Clint Eastwood  are Allied spies attempting to infiltrate a Nazi castle deep in the mountains in this action packed Boys Own adventure that was a major influence on Star Wars.

Flags of Our Fathers 

The American side of Clint Eastwood's  two film set about the battle of Iwo Jima deals the fate of the men who raised the flag in the famous picture.

The Thin Red Line 

Terrence Malick's  return to filmmaking after 20 years is a beautifully shot dream-like meditation on war and nature, with a cast of stars almost the equal of a Bridge Too Far.

Vietnam War Films

The Vietnam War is perhaps second only to World War 2 as the conflict most portrayed on film. As befits a messy and controversial war, most of the films made about it are dark and gritty, focusing less on heroism and daring deeds and more on the pain and horror of war.

Apocalypse Now 

Francis Ford Coppola's  follow up to the Godfather films transposes Heart of Darkness  to Vietnam, and stars Martin Sheen  and Marlon Brando  in iconic roles.

The Deer Hunter 

Three friends go to Vietnam, get captured, play some Russian roulette, and their lives are never the same again. Focusing more on the aftermath of the war than action and battles, it is one of the most powerful and tragic war films.

Platoon 

Oliver Stone's Oscar  winning war film stars Charlie Sheen  as a young recruit torn between two sergeants battling for control of his platoon, one representing good and one representing evil.

Tigerland 

Colin Farrell  plays a young recruited drafted into the army to fight in Vietnam, and his rebellion against his officers and the army system during training.

Full Metal Jacket 

Stanley Kubrick's  attempt to make a definitive Vietnam film to match his definitive First World War and Cold War follows a platoon of soldiers from their dehumanising training program to the even more dehumanising war.
