Women's Jewellery Storage Buying Guide
Consider your jewellery collection
. Is it all austere pendants
and pins or a treasure trove of everything glittery and bejewelled? Either way, it all needs proper storage. Keep all your diamonds and pearls (or reasonable imitations thereof) safe from vacuums, dark corners, and theft. Jewellery storage
can keep you as organised
as you are in the rest of your daily life: your baubles will be easy to find and less likely to get in one of those impossible tangles. Everyone has different jewels and various storage needs, so the perfect solution differs from person to person. How do you know which method is best for you? No worries, we're here to give you all the information you need to make an informed choice.
Jewellery Boxes
Jewellery boxes
are easily the most common way to store jewellery in the home (businesses use trays and hand mannequins more often than not). Jewellery boxes
tend to be small with sectioned trays made for storing necklaces
, rings, and so on, so they're quite versatile. They're popular birthday presents for young girls
, especially in music box form, and they also make great anniversary presents
for more mature women.
|
Pros: - Variety! There is no doubt that you'll be able to find a jewellery box
that suits your style.
- Many have a built-in mirror
so you can put on your earrings and examine your necklaces without needing to walk to the other side of the room.
Cons: - If your jewellery collection grows, you'll need to buy a new box. Most do not offer any method for expanding their capacity, so you'll inevitably have a lot of little boxes on your nightstand and dressing table.
|
Cabinets
Beyond a simple jewellery box, armoire
-style jewellery cabinets
are a work of art unto themselves. They're also useful for storing delicates like silk ties or lingerie. Besides the drawers, there are usually side panels with hooks for necklace storage.
|
Pros: - An elegant way to store a large assortment of jewellery.
- Extremely easy to organise and keep your prized possessions neat, with all the space you'd need for pearls (see below).
Cons: - Over-the-top for people who don't possess a lot of jewellery.
- Takes up floor space, making it a poor fit for smaller rooms.
|
Organiser Trays
Organiser trays
are an easy way to keep everything safe. Most jewellery trays
can be stacked, which is space-efficient and allows for easy access when you're going on a date
.
|
Pros: - Easy to expand. Did you get a lot of jewellery for your birthday? Not a problem. Simply buy another tray and stack it on top!
- Easy to hide in any drawer, for optimum safety and security.
- You can customise the type of storage you need. Sick of having a million hooks for necklaces
and only one drawer for rings ? Not a problem. Simply buy more of what you need and less of what you don't.

Travel Organiser
Travel organisers
for jewellery are essential when you're on the move. You need that last bit of polish and refinement the right piece of jewellery adds when you're on holiday and looking for a night out
. They're also a handy way to keep all your baubles protected and neatly arranged when you're moving house. A good travel case
is compact and has lots of chambers, and it should keep jewellery from getting loose (so you can't just use any portable bag
or case). They come in a few different styles, illustrated below:
|
|
|
Zip-Up Travel Cases These usually feature chambers and pockets for optimal organisation, and are the right size for a carry-on. The zip is the highlight; as long as it's done up, your stuff won't fall out. |
Travel Jewellery Boxes More like a regular jewellery box, but with more padding and a closure on the front, usually magnetic. Not great for overnight trips, as they're on the bulky side.
|
Jewellery Rolls Easy to deal with: simply place the earrings or necklace inside, roll it up, fasten it, and shove it in your purse or luggage . |
Hangers and Hooks
Popular among young women, jewellery hangers
come in several shapes and sizes, most notably as trees, coat hooks, and the occasional miniature mannequin.
|
Pros: - Jewellery is easier to find if displayed openly.
- Easy organisation: earrings hang in pairs, and necklaces don't get tangled together.
- Adds variety and style to bedroom surfaces.
Cons: - Pieces that don't hang well (brooches, pins, studded earrings, and individual charms) will need their own storage solution.
- Limited storage capacity.
- The easier you can get to your jewellery, the easier it can be lost or stolen.
|
Pearl Storage
Pearls need their own special methods of storage and care. Pearls can be kept in a regular jewellery box so long as it is lined with velvet and doesn't come in contact with other items, but it is best to keep them in their own separate storage container.
|
- Wrap the pearls in soft fabric or put them in a cloth pouch
.
- Allow them to lie horizontally; never hang a pearl necklace from a hook.
- Pearls are soft, porous, and delicate; keep them away from hard metal jewellery.
- Don't put on your pearls until after you've applied make-up, hairspray, and perfume.
- After wearing your pearls, give them a wipe with a soft microfibre cloth before putting them away again.
