Audio Shelf Systems

Some people are just not electronically inclined--I am one of those people. We non-electronomaniacs are the ones who break a nervous sweat in the AV section, or who cringe at the thought of buying a high tech gift. Some of us have had an mp3 player for what seems like always, but sometimes it can get left in the gym locker, leaving us music-less overnight. We are mini-system type people. The all-in-one mini system (or audio shelf system) provides us with a simple way to have home audio without all the frustration.

Why a mini-system?

These systems are great for anyone who needs to save space, or who does not have the money for individual components.

Features

  • Tuner: At the very least you should have an AM/FM stereo radio, but it is definitely worth it to get one with pre-set station memory so you don't have to fiddle around for your favourite channels.
  • CD player: You can get a single disk player or one with a CD changer that holds three or more disks. It should also be able MP3 compatible.
  • Dual tape cassette deck: Most people have replaced all of their cassette tapes with CDs (or MP3 files), but if you are still stuck in the 1980s and this feature appeals to you, you can get it! If you want to do a lot of cassette recording, look for a real time counter, as well as auto reverse and high speed dubbing.
  • Speakers: Check the system's speaker specifications for, at minimum, a tweeter  for higher frequencies and a woofer for the mid and bass sounds.
  • Dolby Digital: Most mini systems are two channel stereo systems, but some also offer Dolby digital and additional speakers for a surround sound experience.
  • Equaliser: Equalisers allow you to customize your music and have more control over your audio.
  • Extra jack connections: Look for jacks that allow a line in and a line out so you can add options like a satellite ratio or home theatre on to your system later.
  • Remote: Most systems will include a remote. I would say this is a desirable feature.
  • Timer: If the system has a clock, you may want a timer so you can program it to start and stop automatically (it may even come with an alarm clock!).
