Breadmakers Buying Guide

There's nothing like the scent of warm bread baking, but ugh, who wants to do all the work?  The kneading, the waiting, the kneading again, more waiting, the baking...who has the time?  However, there is an easy way to have fresh bread whenever you like.  Thanks to breadmakers you can make a variety of delicious loaves in the comfort of your own home.

Before Purchasing

While a breadmaker could be a great addition to your kitchen, you should think about a few things before you run out and buy one.  Though prices have come down in recent years, £70 is still a fair chunk of change to spend on something you rarely use.

  • How much bread are we talking here?: Consider how many people you'll be baking for, and let that influence your decision on how big a machine to buy.  Furthermore, it's important to note that larger breadmakers tend to have a longer baking time.
  • Horizontal or vertical?: Horizontal machines will turn out loaves that look similar to store-bought ones.
  • What features will you use?: Don't get all those expensive bells and whistles unless they're absolutely necessary.  Do you need to program  your machine or delay its start time  Would you like it to keep your bread warm  after it is done baking?  Do you need customizable options to deal with whole wheat or seed breads  Are you looking for a machine that can also cook other foods?
