Dumbbells Buying Guide

When it comes to weight training, dumbbells are a great way to tone or gain muscle, especially if you are looking to isolate specific muscle groups. They range in shape, size, and quality, so be sure to pick out which pair will best suit your workout needs. If you are unwilling to scroll down and take a look, how will you ever get yourself to work out

The Two Main Types of Dumbbells

Fixed-Weight Dumbbells

A fixed light-weight dumbbell is best for toning muscles because the focus is on repetition rather than weight.

Adjustable Dumbbells

The adjustable dumbbell is best for increasing strength and can grow with you as you get stronger.

Things to Consider Before Buying

  • Comfort: If repeatedly using your weights, look for something with a rubber grip. If you already have a good quality but uncomfortable set maybe a pair of weight lifting gloves can help. First time buyers should look for something with good grip material--rubber, plastic, grip handles--because smooth bars slip in sweaty hands, and textured metal bars can cause skin irritations and bruises.
  • Durability: How long will you be using your weight set? If you do not plan on using your weights often or if you are a beginner, then start with a pair of cheap plastic weights. These weights--usually filled with water or sand--will undoubtedly wear with time, but they are good for people who are either testing their ground or exercising lightly. For more advanced exercisers, a cast iron set is more appropriate--it can withstand wear, abuse, and time.
  • Portability: If you need--or want--to haul your weight set between locations, then hollow plastic dumbbells are your best option. You can travel with the lightweight plastic forms, and then fill them up when you arrive at your destination. As mentioned above, these sets are not very durable and will need to be replaced in a few years--worth it when you think about dragging an extra 20 kilos of luggage.
  • Size: When it comes to space, size is very important. One pair of adjustable weights can be a real space saver. Unlike a home gym, or a large set of fixed-weights, the adjustable weights can be easily stored. Or, if you only need one pair of fixed-weights for toning, space should not be an issue.
  • Price: A cheaper weight set is often just as serviceable as a more expensive set; the difference in price comes down to design, special features, customization, and brand. It is important to decide what features you will need so that you do not overpay for something you will not use.
