Fencing Sabre Buying Guide

Whether starting a new hobby or simply looking to find a way to act like a pirate for a few hours a week, sabre fencing is an excellent way to revisit the classic form of one-on-one, sword-to-sword combat. Unlike other forms of fencing (foil  and epee ), sabre fencng permits striking your opponent with the side of the blade for points. This makes for much quicker movements, so make sure you're adequately equipped for combat!

If you are just starting out, a fencing sabre starter kit  might be your best option. This will include all the necessary fencing equipment, and will last you for many years. This will also give you a launching point to more personally tailor your future fencing needs.

Next you will need to choose whether you want an electric  or non-electric  sabre. Remember, you aren't stuck with one or the other; you can purchase an electric conversion kit  which will electrify your non-electric sword.

Whether or not you decide to fight electrically, make sure you buy the appropriate gear!

If you ever break your sword (sabres are known for brittle blades), you may want to replace the part instead of buying a new one. Here are the parts that compose the sabre sword:

Protection

Sabre fencing can get messy, so make sure to get the appropriate protective gear. Almost all of these items are specialized to specific fencing forms, so if you are starting sabre fencing, make sure you purchase gear specifically made for that form.

Here are the necessities:

  • Sabre Masks - Also come as Electric Sabre Masks. 
  • Gloves - With a lacerated hand, you might not make it through the first round.
  • Plastrons - To protect the underarm.
  • Chest Protector - Highly recommended for women to protective the sensitive areas.
  • Cup - Your future progeny will be happy you bought this one.
  • Sabre Lames - Covers both arms, the torso from shoulders to waist, and the back. They are usually equipped with a body cord  that is attached to a scoring machine  to register touches.
  • Socks - Knee-high and breathable.
  • Shoes - Yes, even specialized shoes.
  • Bags - To protect everything you've just bought!
