Goalie Leg Pads Buying Guide

Most goalie pads are made from a foam interior wrapped with a synthetic leather exterior. The clips in the back can be metal or plastic. Plastic clips  are more malleable, easier to close, but have a shorter lifespan, while metal clips  are more difficult to close but last longer.

Pad sizes are measured in inches and range from 26-34 inches long. To determine your pad size, simply measure from the top of your ankle to the top of your kneecap, then from the middle of your kneecap to the middle of your thigh. Then add those two numbers together, and there you have it!

You will want to break in the pads as much as possible before using them in game-play. The knee and ankle joints are where you need the most manoeuvrability, so start there. Take a skate lace, or any long and thin rope. Then, stand over the pad, which should be facing up, and find the spot on the pad that corresponds to where your knee would be. Step on the spot, pull up the two articulating ends, and tie them together with the skate lace. Leave this overnight. The next day, untie it, beat it with a hockey stick and repeat the process.

Some additional hints:  Never keep your pads in direct sunlight, as this will crack the leather. Always dry them after use in a well ventilated area (you will understand why if you ever decide to test this).
