Goalie Mask Buying Guide

An Ice Hockey Goalie may be one of the most protected players in all of sport. Much money goes into finding the entire set of goalie garb, and indeed, nothing should be spared. As for most goalie equipment, safety is the most important element, and since most hockey manufacturers create equipment of similar material, the next safety feature is size. Masks are no different: most masks offer the same quality in terms of structure. They are made from a strong plastic similar to bike helmets, and have a steel wire cage to protect the face and allow decent peripheral vision. Determining your helmet size can be difficult, as many manufacturers use different scales with which to size the helmets. However, goalie masks typically have adjustable padding and straps to customize the helmet to maximize comfort.

Younger ice hockey players will definitely need junior masks as a large size on a tiny head could make for a dangerous and terrible experience.

Some masks will NOT come with a neck guard an extremely important feature for hockey safety, so it is important to buy one seperately if your helmet comes without one. Other than that, style tends to be the main difference between various helmets, so take your time and find one to suit your preference.
