Handsel Monday Buying Guide

In Scotland and parts of northern England, the first Monday of the new year is known as Handsel Monday.  A handsel is the equivalent of a Christmas box, so on this day, small presents or gifts of money are given out in a fashion similar to that of Boxing Day.  This holiday is also celebrated on 12 January (under the name Auld Handsel Monday) among the more rural populations.  It was tradition to treat all servants to a large savoury breakfast, whiskey ale  and cake, and after the meal, the workers were given the day off to commune with friends and family.
