If you have the money for it, having a wedding cake  professionally designed to your dream specifications can send your wedding flying over the top of mediocre straight to fabulous.  But it's important to make sure your cake designer  is up to par so you don't wind up with a melty mess or a cake that tastes like it came from a Betty Crocker box.  Check out the following tips to get you on the right track toward wedding cake perfection.

The Basic Steps

  1. Start the search. Looking for a cake designer with a good reputation is key. Take the recommendations of friends and family before anyone else. If no one has any good suggestions, it's okay to scour the yellow pages or the web, but you need to individually meet each cake candidate to sample their food and talk to them about their credentials.
  2. Throw out ideas. On each interview, tell the cake designer what sort of cake you're looking for. If his or her reaction borders on shock and awe, it's a safe bet that you should move on to the next interview. And if you don't have any idea what you want out of your wedding cake, you might want to do some research in wedding magazines  or surf the web for ideas. Print or cut out pictures to bring along with you on interviews.
  3. Ask questions. Ask the designer questions about the fillings that they use, how long it takes to make each cake and how much experience he or she has. It's also a great idea to try to get a taste of some of the things he or she has whipped up, along with photos  of the previous work. These photos may even inspire you if you haven't already got a vision set in stone.
  4. Decision-making. After you've been on several interviews, discuss your options with your fiancé(e). Decide who would be the most capable of creating the cake you desire while staying within budget.  Consider revisions to your cake at this time--like fake tiers--in order to use a skilled designer while saving on money.

The Cake Itself

Make sure you cover all the bases when deciding on your cake's overall look.  This not only includes fillings, flavours and colours, but also extra add-ons like icing ribbons or polka dots.  You also have to consider what shape you'd like the tiers to be, as well as what sort of cake topper you would like to use and how many people you need the cake to serve.  Bring a checklist with you when you go to interview cake designers to see who can best satisfy your needs.
