Horror and Suspense Films Buying Guide

There's nothing more cathartic than getting scared by a good horror film or feeling your pulse race during a tense moment in a thriller. Indulge in some fear with these suspense and horror movie titles.

Suspense Thrillers

If these films don't keep you on the edge of your seat, you should get a new seat. The one you have must be huge.

Memento 

Guy Pearce  plays a man with no short term memory, searching for his wife's killer but unable to remember what he was doing or where he's going.

No Country for Old Men 

The Oscar winning film from the Coen Brothers  stars Javier Bardem  as a demonic hitman relentlessly pursuing Josh Brolin  and 2 million dollars across a Texas desert that is inhospitable to old men.

The Usual Suspects 

Six suspects are brought in for a line-up and become entangled in a conspiracy involving mythical crime lord Keyser Soze.

 The Silence of the Lambs 

Jodie Foster  and Anthony Hopkins  both won Oscars for their portrayal of young FBI agent Clarice Starling and posh cannibal Hannibal Lector.

 

Blue Velvet 

David Lynch's  surreal suburban nightmare gave Dennis Hopper  a career defining role as Frank, the nitrous oxide huffing, Pabst Blue Ribbon  loving, completely terrifying psychopath.

Horror Films

Quality horror can reduce all but the most hardened of souls into whimpering scared little babies. If that's what you're into, these are some of the best fright flicks.

The Exorcist 

One of the famous famous horror films ever, this tale of demonic possession had audiences throwing up in cinemas when it was first shown.

Jaws  

Steven Spielberg's  first major hit, and the film that made a generation afraid of the water.

The Descent 

A group of spelunkers get trapped in a cave, and things only get worse when some mutant monsters show up.

The Shining 

Stanley Kubrick  put his own stamp on Steven King's novel about a writer going insane in a haunted hotel, and allowed Jack Nicholson  to cut loose and give one of the great hammy performances.

The Dead Zone 

Christopher Walken  plays a man who wakes from a coma to find he can see peoples' future, in this film by cult horror director David Cronenberg .

Classics

These classic thrillers and chillers have been thrilling and chilling audiences for decades.

Vertigo 

Often considered Alfred Hitchcock's  best film, Jimmy Stewart  stars as a vertigo suffering former detective hired to tail a friend's wife, on the suspicion that she may be possessed.

The Wages of Fear 

Henri-Georges Clouzot's  almost unbearably suspenseful film about 4 down and outs hired to drive trucks full of nitro-glycerin across unpaved mountain roads, knowing even the slightest bump could cause them to explode.

Psycho 

Possibly Hitchcock's most well known film, and the inspiration for the slasher and serial killer genres. Janet Leigh  spends a bad night at the Bates Motel.

Duel 

Steven Spielberg's first film, about a man being pursued by a menacing truck and its unseen driver.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 

Low budget, violent 70s horror that began a cycle of similary gritty and low budget horror films. Not for the squeamish, or those afraid of chainsaws.
