Lightweight Prams Buying Guide

When you have a baby or toddler, you're always lugging around a bunch of stuff.  From diaper bags  to teddies  and lunch boxes the toys  and gadgets  can seem endless.  Luckily, some kiddie gear is easy to transport  and may actually improve your quality of life.  If you're looking for a pram that can store some of baby's goodies while still being lightweight and easy to pack into the car, you're in luck.  There a bunch of models on the market made specifically to be light and manoeuvrable for mums that are really on the move.

Is Lightweight for You?

The benefits of lightweight prams are great.

  • They fit and fold into the car easily so you don't have to buy a separate stroller.
  • They can easily be carried up the stairs or fit into a lift.
  • Many lightweight prams are compact enough to fit onto various forms of public transport.
  • They can be folded or taken apart to be stored in the garage or at home.
  • If you only use your pram  on level ground and short trips--like a trip to the mall or grocer--lightweight prams work best.

But lightweight prams may not cater to every lifestyle.

  • Larger prams  work better if you intend to go on a lot of outdoor walks with your baby. They are sturdier and more stable, providing better comfort and ease of movement on rough terrain. These prams often have three large wheels  that are inflatable, and thus provide a smoother ride.
  • Larger prams tend to have more accessories, like cup holders  and storage pockets
  • Larger prams often have reversible seats so that your baby can sit facing forward or toward you. These models also often include reversible and/or swivel wheels.
  • Only larger, heavier prams can accommodate twins  or triplets

Remember To...

  • Make sure the pram fits in your car before you buy it. Although lightweight prams may be easy to lift into your car, they may not fit unless the wheels are removed. Others require disassembly or folding, so choose a model that is most convenient for your everyday life.
  • Keep your pram if you may have more children. Since lightweight prams are so easy to store, it would be silly to get rid of it after baby has grown. Save it for your next child or a relative in need.
  • Account for comfort and security. You want to keep your baby happy and healthy, so weight shouldn't be your sole consideration when pram shopping.
