Lodging Guide

Booking your perfect getaway can become stressful, and though we don't sell accommodations, we are here to help you figure it all out.  If it's a long weekend in a bed and breakfast  or a few weeks in a top resort know what to look for before you book a room.

The Rating System

You can often trust large names like Marriott and Hilton to provide excellent service, but what about all of the other hotel options?  Sometimes smaller boutique hotels  can offer something special that the large chains  cannot.  For this reason, a rating system of stars is applied to the review of the hotel.  This rating system is recognised internationally, and gives guests an idea of what to expect no matter where their travels take them.

Where Should You Stay?

5 Stars

This category is of the highest standards, where you should expect the utmost in style and luxury.

  • Room service, elaborate bedding and often a top-rated spa  or star restaurant  can be found within a 5-star hotel.
  • You should prepare to be very well cared for by an attentive staff looking to fulfil your every travel need

4 Stars

4-star lodging  can be spacious and offer the creature comforts of home, but with a small touch of luxury.

  • Expect private bathrooms and a strong emphasis on the quality of the guest rooms
  • There is often much attention put into the food and drink, and you can also anticipate 24-hour room service

3 Stars

The average traveller will look for a 3-star hotel, as it is provides comfort and affordability.

  • Though rooms may be smaller, you will still have a private bathroom  and occasionally a mini-bar
  • Room service can be expected, but is limited to certain periods of time.

2 Stars

A 2-star hotel will offer a basic guest room and occasionally a few touches of home.

  • Rooms will be equipped with a TV  and phone but don't always expect a private bathroom.
  • Some accommodations may include breakfast or dinner in a small dining room

1 Star

Lodging at a 1-star hotel or hostel  is the most inexpensive of options, but will offer practical accommodations.

  • Be prepared to share the shower  down the hall or occasionally even share a room.
  • Check out the neighbourhood  first and avoid staying in an area where you might feel unsafe at night.

 Ideas About Pricing and Reservations

  • The Rate: Keep in mind that when booking, the rate is (unless otherwise noted) per room, not per person.
  • Currency: Be aware of the currency being used.  The conversion rate in many countries will vary, so be sure you know what it's going to cost you.
  • Surcharges: Know that sometimes taxes, gratuities, and booking fees are not included in the listed price and can add a few pounds onto your total.
  • Meals: Meals are only included in the price if the booking agent indicates that this is so.
    • Half-board indicates that breakfast and dinner are included in the price of your room.
    • Full-board will include all meals -- breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- for the duration of your holiday stay.
    • All-inclusive typically includes all meals, snacks, drinks, and non-motorised water sports at the resort or hotel.  All-inclusive  plans vary by hotel, so be sure to get the details!
  • Children: Many hotels will offer a special rate for guests travelling with children.  Check with the hotel directly to find out more information.
  • Transfers: A transfer from an airport to a hotel is only included in the rate if it says so.  Don't anticipate this unless you see it in writing.
  • Location: Is the hotel close to public transportation?  Will the hotel offer a shuttle or taxi service to your areas of interest and will this be included in the price?  This detail can alter where you might choose to stay.
  • Snacks:  Some hotels may charge you for the use of coffee  or the liquor  in the mini-bar.  Bring your own snacks  to avoid paying these extra charges.
  • Reservations:  Before booking, take note of all of the fine print.  Once you are aware of what you are paying for, then be sure to print out all of your paperwork and carry it with you to verify your accommodations.
