Men's Winter Style Guide

Now that its cold outside, are you seriously thinking about wearing that ribbed turtle-neck sweater  from 6 years ago? Please don't.  In fact, do us all a favour and toss it in the rubbish bin  Everyone likes to look their best when they go out, and that sweater doesn't help.  Use this style guide to update your winter wardrobe, and show the ladies you know how to dress hot when it gets cold.

Outerwear

The black pea coat is an essential item to your winter outerwear.  They can dress up denim, and can also be worn with work attire.  Plus, they never go out of style.

  • This is a timeless addition to your wardrobe; don't be afraid to spend a bit extra.

When the weather takes a frigid turn, keep warm stylishly with a heavy hooded parka. Fur-lined hoods add an elegant but rustic look to your outfit, not to mention they keep you extra warm.

  •  Don't be afraid to buy a heavy jacket in a colour other than black.

Head out to the office in style with a slim-fit trench coat that keeps you warm while looking sharp.

  • Don't forget that anything "slim-fit" will have a more narrow cut in the shoulders and back.
    • Choose a larger size if needed to keep the jacket's arms at the proper length.

Tops

You will quickly become addicted to the soft feel and dapper look of a cashmere sweater.  They can be worn by themselves, or under a shirt and tie.

  •  Choose a v-neck for a more upscale look.

Button neck sweaters are another winter wardrobe essential.  Style it by leaving some of the buttons undone and layering  a dressier shirt of similar colour underneath.

  • Look for one with thick knit patterns for great texture.

The wool blazer is another culprit for spiffing up an ordinary outfit.  These are great for a cold night out on the town when a jacket is too heavy to wear inside the pub. Try layering it with a smart shirt and sweater.

  • If your blazer has three buttons, remember the rule:
    • Top- sometimes
    • Middle- always
    • Bottom- never

These are a nice stylish alternative to plain long-sleeve shirts.  Layer it with your favourite t-shirt for a casual, hip look.

  • Henleys go great with vintage t-shirts.

Bottoms

Denim

Designer Denim

  • A great-fitting pair of denim jeans are perhaps the single most important item in a man's wardrobe.
  • Try styles that are less baggy in the leg for a more current look.

Trousers

Black Trousers

  • Take a break from denim with a pair of comfortable black trousers.  They go with just about everything, and can dress up any outfit.
    • Try wearing your charcoal or dark grey cashmere sweater over these.
  • Avoid pin-stripes. This pattern is "in" one minute and "out" the next. Solids are timeless. Here is a good starting points for trousers:

Accessories

Wrap one of these around your neck to instantly bump your outfit up a notch.

When it comes to winter hats, The North Face does a great job of keeping you warm and looking sharp at the same time with their winter hats.  Pick one of these up for when the snow begins to fall.

Don't  forget to buy pair of fleece gloves for your winter wardrobe.  They are much more comfortable (and warmer) than traditional leather gloves, and accomplish the same thing.
