Nappies Buying Guide

Contents[Hide]

The wonderful world of nappies is a scary and usually dirty place. Many people use disposables and some use washables, but in the end all babies need them. Unfortunately nappies are a necessary evil, but this information will make them much more comfortable.

Washable Nappies.

Washable nappies  may be daunting, but in reality, they aren't that difficult to deal with.

Advantages:

  • They last for many months.
  • Although initially they are more expensive than disposable nappies, in the long run they can save you hundreds.
  • For "green"-minded people, they are less wasteful.

Disadvantages:

  • They need to be stored and washed.
  • Some can not be tumble dried (read washing instructions)

How to care for your nappies:

  • There are several parts to a nappy:
    • The Inner Liner: These are disposable and usually biodegradable.
    • The Nappy: This soaks up the liquid and is washable.
    • The Outer Liner: This water proof liner usually can't be tumble dried but they come in many colours and designs!
  • There may be a nappy washing service you can use. If not:
  • Dispose of the inner liner and wash the nappy. It is as easy as that!

Disposable Nappies.

Of course, disposable nappies  are going to be more convenient, here are some things to look for when purchasing.

Advantages:

  • They are much more convenient than washable nappies.
  • There is no washing or folding.

Disadvantages:

  • In the long run these nappies can add up on your bills.
  • They are an incredible waste and can hurt the environment.

Healthy Disposable Nappies:

  • Disposable nappies have chemicals in them which help to absorb the liquid and keep baby dry. However, sometimes these chemicals can be harmful. There is a solution:
    • Seventh Generation has created a nappy product which is biodegradable and completely non-toxic for babies. This could be a better, healthier, earth-friendly decision when picking nappy brands.
